Mental readiness of ice hockey players

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na mentální připravenost hráčů ledního hokeje. Smíšený výzkumný design, zahrnující realizaci dotazníkového šetření prostřednictvím metody OMSAT-3 na souboru padesáti profesionálních hráčů ledního hokeje ve věku od 21 do 39 (25,6) let a realizaci hloubkových rozhovorů s šesti respondenty ve věku od 21 do 39 let (28,1), jejichž výsledky byly analyzovány za pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy. Cílem bylo zmapovat a blíže prozkoumat klíčové mentální dovednosti, které ovlivňují výkonnost hráčů a současně identifikovat i specifické oblasti, ve kterých potřebují zlepšení. Bylo zjištěno, že nadprůměrně rozvinuté mentální dovednosti mají hráči ve faktoru sebedůvěra. Mezi jednotlivými kategoriemi hokejistů hrajících na úrovni Extraliga, Chance liga a reprezentanti byl zjištěn rozdíl mezi reprezentanty a hráči Chance ligy ve faktoru aktivace. V rámci rozhovorů se respondenti shodují, že nejvíce podporuje jejich mentální připravenost týmový sport, adekvátní fyzická příprava a význam psychické podpory ze strany rodiny a spoluhráčů. Nevýhodou k cestě za správnou mentální přípravou je pak špatná kvalita sociální opory nebo negativní faktory na straně trenéra. Výsledky studie mohou být vodítkem pro týmy a trenéry, jak navrhnout konkrétní strategie a tréninkové metody pro posílení mentální dovedností jednotlivých hráčů.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the mental readiness of ice hockey players. A mixed research design, including conducting a questionnaire survey using the OMSAT-3 method on a set of fifty professional ice hockey players aged between 21 and 39 (25.6) and conducting in-depth interviews with six respondents aged between 21 and 39 (28.1), the results of which were analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis. The aim was to map and further explore the key mental skills that influence player performance while identifying the specific areas in which they need improvement. Players were found to have above-average mental skills in the confidence factor. Between the different categories of hockey players playing at the Extraliga, Chance League and Representative level, there was a difference between the representatives and chance league players in the activation factor. As part of the interviews, respondents agree that team sports, adequate physical preparation and the importance of mental support from family and teammates are most supportive of their mental preparedness. The downside to going for proper mental preparation is the poor quality of the social support or the negative factors on the part of the coach. The results of the study may provide guidance for teams and coaches on how to design specific strategies and training methods to enhance the mental skills of individual players.
