The Pleasures and Perils of Ageing: Agency within the Third and Fourth Ages

Abstract:

V súčasnosti je starnutie človeka v kontexte Českej republiky charakterizovateľné predovšetkým dvomi črtami: feminizáciou staroby a postupným zvyšovaním počtu najstarších ľudí, ktorí sú obmedzení rôznymi zdravotnými znevýhodneniami. Hlavným cieľom piatich výskumných štúdií, ktoré sú zahrnuté v tejto dizertačnej práci, je preskúmať tieto častokrát menej viditeľné formy starnutia so zvláštnym dôrazom na skúmanie prítomnosti aktérstva v rôznych sférach života. Štúdie využívajú life course a lifespan perspektívu na individuálny vývin človeka. Ako pojmy senzitivizujúce skúmanie využívajú koncepty tretieho a štvrtého veku, koncept aktérstva a gendered sexuality over the life course model. Dáta sú analyzované pomocou tematickej analýzy, zakotvenej teórie a vybraných princípov konsenzuálneho kvalitatívneho výskumu. Výsledky poukazujú na to, že dôraz aký participantky štúdií kladú na individuálne aktérstvo, môže byť jedným zo spôsobov, ako sa definovať ako bezveká, ale takisto spôsobom, akým sa participantky dokážu dištancovať od spoločenského vyobrazenia nevyhnutne závislého a zraniteľného veku. Zistenia štúdií ďalej ukazujú, že kontinuitu sexuálnej aktivity možno považovať za nástroj na zmiernenie ukazovateľov starnutia, zatiaľ čo hrozba jej poklesu môže aktivovať túžbu starších ľudí po asexuálnom starnutí a negatívnych náhľadoch na vlastné starnutie. Zistenia práce ďalej poukazujú na to, že popri aktívnych individualistických formách aktérstva sú v starobe zásadné jemnejšie a menej viditeľné formy aktérstva, ktoré možno odvodiť skôr z princípov vzájomnej závislosti ako z princípu nezávislosti. Tieto sú nevedomé, menej kontrolovateľné a často považované za neúplné. Štúdie v tejto súvislosti ďalej poukazujú na dôležitosť vzťahových súvislostí v procese starnutia a navrhujú rekonštrukciu koncepcie aktérstva ako relačnej kategórie. Na základe teórií a výsledkov, práca nakoniec navrhuje konceptualizáciu vekových asymetrií, ktoré vznikajú vo vzťahoch so staršími ľuďmi so získanými znevýhodneniami. Vekové asymetrie je potrebné reflektovať s cieľom predísť odľudšťovaniu ľudí v štvrtom veku a s cieľom zabrániť marginalizácii ich životných skúseností.

Abstract:

Currently, the descriptions of ageing in the context of the Czech Republic bear two specific features: the feminisation of old age and the progressive increase of the population of the oldest-old who are frequently limited by various disabilities and infirmities. The five studies covered in this thesis are guided by these features and aim to explore often less visible forms of ageing, emphasising the exploration of agency in various spheres of life. The studies adopt life-course and lifespan perspectives on human development and use the concept of the Third and Fourth Ages, the concept of agency, and Gendered Sexuality over the Life Course Model to sensitise the process of exploration. The data are analysed using thematic analysis, a grounded theory approach and the selected principles of consensual qualitative research. The study findings highlight that the emphasis put on an individual agency by female research participants is a way of defining oneself as ageless, as well as a way of distancing oneself from the social imagery of dependent and infirm old age. Findings also show that the continuity of sexual activity may be viewed as an instrument for mitigating the markers of getting old, while the threat of its decline may activate older people 's desire for asexual ageing and negative views on ageing. The thesis findings further point out that, in addition to active individualistic forms of agency, more subtle and less visible forms of agency are essential in old age, which may be derived from the ideas of interdependence rather than from independence and are therefore unwitting, less controlled and often defective. In this vein, the thesis findings highlight the importance of the relational context in the process of ageing and propose that the concept of agency should be reconstructed as a relational category. Based on the literature and study findings, the thesis also proposes the conceptualisation of age asymmetries emerging in relationships with older people with acquired impairment in later life that need to be recognised to avoid othering research participants in the Fourth Age and to prevent the marginalisation of their life experiences.
