Ukrainian diaspora in the Czech Republic: representation of identity

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá kulturní identitou ukrajinské diaspory v ČR a její reprezentací v rámci české společnosti. Nejprve jsou shrnuta specifika ukrajinské migrace na české území v jejich historickém kontextu a nastíněna současná situace Ukrajinců v ČR s důrazem na kolektivní a spolkovou činnost a organizace zastřešující jejich kulturní aktivity. V následující části jsou představena základní teoretická východiska této práce. Pozornost je zde věnována konceptualizaci diaspory jako kategorii k uchopení specifických migračních skupin a její aplikaci na konkrétní fenomén Ukrajinců v ČR. Dále je představen teoretický rámec přístupu k procesům utváření identity a její reprezentace, jež jsou nahlíženy v perspektivě sociálního konstruktivismu. V poslední části, která je stěžejní, je analyzována mediální reprezentace kulturní identity ukrajinské diaspory v ČR z hlediska její sociální konstrukce. Diskutovány jsou zde jednotlivé dimenze, jimiž je utvářen diskurz „ukrajinství“, jako například role tradic, význam umění, ritualizovaná kolektivní zkušenost, společný jazyk, náboženská komunita a vzpomínání na společnou historii, které se zdají být na základě analyzovaných materiálů nejvýznamnějšími konstitutivními prvky kulturní identity ukrajinské diaspory v ČR. „Ukrajinství“ se v této perspektivě ukazuje jako multidimenzionální identita, která je stále v procesu, a jako taková je nejen udržována, ale zároveň konstruována v rámci své reprezentace.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the cultural identity of the Ukrainian diaspora in the Czech Republic and its representation in the Czech society. Firstly, there are summarised specifics of Ukrainian migration to the Czech territory in their historical context and an outline of the current situation of Ukrainians in the Republic with an emphasis on collective and club activities and the organizations cooperating with their cultural activities. In the following section the basic theoretical background of this work is presented. Attention is paid to the conceptualisation of the diaspora as a category to grasp the specific groups of migrants and its application to the specific phenomenon of Ukrainians in the Czech Republic. After-wards is presented a theoretical framework of the approach to the processes of identity formation and its representation, which are seen in a perspective of social constructivism. In the last part, which is crucial, the media representation of cultural identity of the Ukrainian diaspora in the Czech Republic is analysed in terms of its social construction. There are discussed different dimensions, which constitute the „Ukrainianship“ discourse, such as the role of traditions, the meaning of art, ritualised collective experience, common language, religious community and remembering of common history, which seem to be, based on the analyzed material, the most important constituent elements of the cultural identity of the Ukrainian diaspora in the Czech Republic. „Ukrainianship“ in this perspective appears to be a multidimensional identity which is still in process and as such is not merely maintained, but also constructed through its representation.
