Health benefits attributed to wayusa by users from the Czech Republic and Ecuador

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je zjistit zdravotní přínosy dlouhodobého užívání wayusy ve dvou sociálně a kulturně odlišných prostředích. Dokument je rozdělen na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretická část obsahuje charakteristiku tradiční amazonské medicíny a popis oblastí, kde se wayusa užívá. Dále obsahuje charakteristiku účinků wayusy, jejího terapeutického potenciálu. Praktická část pojednává o vnímání zdravotních přínosů wayusy v České republice a Ekvádoru. Za tímto účelem bylo provedeno dotazníkové šetření a polostrukturované rozhovory. Sběr dat probíhal od 1. 11. 2020 do 31. 1. 2021. Výzkumný vzorek tvoří celkem 20 informátorů z obou zemí, kteří pili wayusu alespoň jednou týdně po dobu 3 měsíců. V České republice bylo zjištěno, že užívání wayusy zlepšuje koncentraci a postupem času také trávení nebo spánek. V Ekvádoru je pití wayusy činností, která úzce souvisí s místními tradicemi a společenskou soudržností. Ze zdravotního hlediska uživatelé oceňují zejména energetizující a močopudné účinky nápoje. Z literární rešerše bylo zjištěno, že se wayusa užívá různými domorodými skupinami v Jižní Americe. Potenciál této rostliny by mohl být využitý v léčbě různých onemocnění. Jedná se například o diabetes mellitus, chronickou parodontitidu nebo neplodnost.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to determine the health benefits of long-term use of wayusa in two socially and culturally different societies. The document is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part contains the characteristics of traditional Amazonian medicine and a description of the areas where wayusa is used. It also contains a description of the effects of wayusa, its therapeutic potential. The practical part includes the perception of the health benefits of wayusa in the Czech Republic and Ecuador. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data collection took place from 1. 11. 2020 to 31. 1. 2021. The research sample consists of a total of 20 informants from both countries who use wayusa at least once a week for 3 months. In the Czech Republic, it has been found that the use of wayusa improves concentration and, over time, also digestion or sleep. In Ecuador, drinking wayusa is an activity that is closely linked to local traditions and social cohesion. Users also especially appreciate the energizing and diuretic effects of the drink. A literature search revealed that the wayusa is used by various indigenous groups in South America. The potential of this plant could be used in the treatment of various diseases. These are, for example, diabetes mellitus, chronic periodontitis or infertility.
