Intercultural Learning: The Answer to Enhancing Intercultural Competence in EFL Classroom

Anotace:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o tom, jak interkulturní učení zvyšuje interkulturní kompetenci ve třídě angličtiny jako cizího jazyka (EFL). Hlavním cílem je zjistit, zda interkulturní učení, je-li správně strukturováno s pomocí adekvátní pedagogické intervence, zvyšuje mezikulturní kompetence studentů EFL. Snaží se také poukázat na výzvy, kterým studenti a učitelé čelí, když se zapojují do interkulturních vzdělávacích aktivit ve třídě EFL, a také prozkoumat, jak lze technologie (např. virtuální výměny, multimédia) využít k podpoře interkulturního učení ve třídě EFL. Teoretická část se zabývá klíčovými principy interkulturního učení a interkulturní kompetence a rekapituluje nejrelevantnější odbornou literaturu a data zabývající se výše uvedeným. Empirická část popisuje studii provedenou mezi dvaceti studenty 9. třídy a dvěma učiteli nižšího gymnázia v České republice. Shromážděné důkazy naznačují, že interkulturní učení zvyšuje mezikulturní kompetence studentů EFL.

Abstract:

This master´s thesis discusses how intercultural learning enhances intercultural competence in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. The principal aim is to determine whether intercultural learning, when properly structured with the help of adequate pedagogical intervention, enhances EFL students´ intercultural competencies. It also seeks to highlight the challenges that students and teachers face when engaging in intercultural learning activities in the EFL classroom and also explore how technology (e.g., virtual exchanges, multimedia) can be used to promote intercultural learning in the EFL classroom. The theoretical part discusses the key principles of intercultural learning and intercultural competence and reviews the most relevant academic literature and data dealing with the aforementioned. The empirical part describes a study conducted among twenty students from class 9 and two teachers of a lower secondary school in the Czech Republic. Evidence gathered suggests that intercultural learning enhances the intercultural competence of EFL students.
