Solving patrolling games using optimization techniques

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá patrolovacími hrami. Tyto hry hrají na orientovaných grafech dva protivníci: jeden hráč (nazývaný útočník) hodlá podniknout útok na jeden z vrcholů grafu, zatímco druhý hráč (nazývaný obránce) se pohybuje po hranách grafu tak, aby případný útok odhalil dříve, než bude úspěšně dokončen. Nejprve ukazujeme příklady patrolovacích her se zajímavými vlastnostmi. Konkrétně dokazujeme, že existuje patrolovací hra, kde každá optimální strategie používá iracionální pravděpodobnosti. Následně aplikujeme metodu gradientního vzestupu pro získání co nejlepší strategie obránce. Tento základní přístup obohacujeme o několik vylepšení, které jednak zvýší účinnost vypočítaných strategií a jednak sníží časovou složitost výsledného algoritmu. Práce je doplněna o funkční implementaci prezentovaného algoritmu v jazyce C.

Abstract:

In this thesis, we study patrolling games. These games are played on a directed graph by two adversaries: one of the players (called attacker or in- truder) plans to arrive at a vertex in order to perform an attack there while the other player (called defender or patroller) keeps moving along the edges of the graph, hoping to catch the intruder while the attack is in progress, or to discourage him from attacking at all. First, we show several examples of pa- trolling games and prove some interesting results. In particular, we prove that there exists a patrolling game where every optimal strategy uses irrational probabilities. Then, we try to directly apply the general method of gradient ascent to synthesize a strategy for the defender which is close to optimal. We come up with several improvements to the direct approach, to enhance both the effectiveness of the synthesized strategies and the time complexity of the resulting algorithm. In addition, we provide a working implementation of the presented algorithm in C.
