Correspondence of C. F. Gauss

Abstract:

Historiografické uvedení do práce C. F. Gausse se zaměřením na diferenciální geometrii. Cílem práce je zkoumání Gaussovy korespondence, zúžené na léta 1813-1842 (s dohledáním kontextuality z let 1808-1813). Na základě toho pak vyjasnit okolnosti a podat způsob uvažování, jakým Gauss své práce z diferenciální geometrie psal, a tím vysvětlit pozadí vzniku jeho příspěvků k dějinám diferenciální geometrie. Práce obsahuje čtyři části: I. Gaussova diferenciální geometrie ve světle intencionální historiografie matematiky; II. Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855); III. Křivé plochy v korespondenci Gauss-Schumacher; IV. Gaussova diferenciální geometrie (překlady). Součástí práce jsou původní kritické překlady (z latiny a němčiny do češtiny) všech Gaussových publikovaných prací k diferenciální geometrii křivých ploch.

Abstract:

The historiographical introduction to work by C. F. Gauss focusing to differential geometry. The aim of dissertation is research of Gauss' correspondence, closed to 1813-1842 years (with contextualisation to 1808-1813). On the basis of it, objective is to clarify background of and to give a way of Gauss' deliberation. It means, how does Gauss wrote his papers on differential geometry. And then to explain an origin of his work with respect to history of differential geometry. The dissertation contains four parts: I. Gauss' differential geometry in the light of intentional historiography of mathematics; II. Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855); III. Curved surfaces in the correspondence between Gauss and Schumacher; IV. Gauss' differential geometry (translations). The original critical translation (Latin and German to Czech) of the all Gauss' published papers to differential geometry of curved surface is included.
