Extension of protection-motivation theory: Classroom relationships and excessive usage in relation to safe behavior of pubescents while using smartphones

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo rozšířit model protekčně motivační teorie o excesivní užívání a vztahy ve třídě, a prozkoumat vztahy mezi těmito proměnnými a záměry k bezpečnému chování i samotným bezpečným chováním s chytrými mobilními telefony dospívajících. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 340 respondentů, z toho 144 chlapců a 196 dívek ve věku od 11 do 17 let. Sledované konstrukty byly měřeny pomocí nově vytvořeného nástroje k měření aspektů protekčně motivační teorie a bezpečného chování, překladu dotazníku excesivního užívání chytrých telefonů a standardizovaného dotazníku klimatu třídy. Na základě výsledků analýz se podařila prokázat souvislost mezi vnímanou efektivitou bezpečnostního opatření, vztahy se spolužáky, excesivním užíváním a záměry k bezpečnému chování. Bezpečné chování samotné taktéž souviselo s vnímanou efektivitou bezpečnostního opatření a excesivním užíváním, navíc ale i s vědomím vlastní účinnosti v oblasti zabezpečení, a naopak nesouviselo se vztahy se spolužáky. U ostatních proměnných nebyly prokázány signifikantní vztahy. Dále bylo zjištěno, že předkládaný model lépe vysvětluje záměry k bezpečnému chování, které pak z části motivují bezpečné chování. Výstupy analýz byly diskutovány s ohledem na možnosti využití v praxi pro zvyšování bezpečného chování dospívajících.

Abstract:

The goal of this thesis was to extend the model of protection-motivation theory to the excessive usage and the classroom relationships and to investigate the relation between these variables and the intentions to safe behavior and safe behavior when using mobile phones among pubescents. 340 respondents participated in the research – 144 boys and 196 girls in the age from 11 to 17 years. The observed constructs were measured using a newly created tool to measure aspects of protection-motivation theory and safe behavior, a translated survey to measure excessive usage of mobile phones, and a standardized survey to measure class climate. Based on the results of the analysis, a relation has been found between the perceived efficiency of safety measures, relationships with classmates, excessive usage, and intentions to safe behavior. The safe behavior itself was related to perceived efficiency of safety measures and to excessive usage, and also to individual‘s perception of efficiency of his own actual safety measures. However, the safe behavior was not related to relationships with classmates. For other variables, no significant relations have been found. It was further discovered that the suggested model is better at explaining intentions to safe behavior, which then partially motivates the safe behavior. The result of the analysis was discussed in context of possibilities of application to promote the safe behavior of pubescents.
