Second-Wave Feminism and Mental Health of Female Protagonists in Ira Levin’s "The Stepford Wives" and Margaret Atwood’s "Surfacing"

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce analyzuje vliv feminismu na způsob zobrazování ženských hrdinek v severoamerické literatuře v době protofeminismu zastupované povídkou od Charlotte Perkins Gilmanové “The Yellow Wallpaper“ (1882) a románu Kate Chopinové The Awakening (1899) ve srovnání s modernějšími texty ze 70. let, jmenovitě The Stepford Wives (1972) od Ira Levina a Surfacing (1972) od Margaret Atwoodové. V práci argumentuji, že s postupem času a nástupem feministických myšlenek existuje tendence přistupovat k psychickým problémům žen profesionálněji a méně zaujatě. Zároveň tvrdím, že psychické problémy a jejich možné vyvrcholení v podobě duševního zhroucení mohou být v konečném důsledku prospěšné pro svůj transformativní potenciál, a proto by neměly být považovány za zcela negativní zkušenost.

Abstract:

This Master’s diploma thesis analyses the effect feminism has had on the way female protagonists in North American literature were depicted in the proto-feminist age in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1882) and Kate Chopin’s novel The Awakening (1899) in comparison to the more recent texts from the 1970s, namely Ira Levin’s The Stepford Wives (1972) and Margaret Atwood’s Surfacing (1972). The thesis argues that there is a tendency to treat women’s psychological issues more professionally and with less bias with the progress of time and the emergence of feminist ideas. At the same time, I maintain that such problems and their possible culmination into a mental breakdown can be ultimately beneficial and should, therefore, not be considered an entirely negative experience.
