Origins, customs and mythology of Germanic tribes in the testimony of ancient sources

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje otázkám původu, zvyků a mytologie germánských kmenů z perspektivy antických pramenů. Práce se zabývá příchodem prvních Germánů a jejich vývojem v očích antických spisovatelů. Nejsou vynechány ani zvyky, způsob života a vliv náboženství na germánskou společnost. Rozdělená je do čtyř období - První zmínky o Germánech, Germáni v době Tacita a jeho současníků a následovníků, pozdní antika a období christianizace. V této práci je shromážděno značné množství zpráv o germánských mravech, fyzických atributech, vztahu nejen s říší římskou, ale i vzájemných rozepří a spojenectví, nebylo vynecháno ani pohrdání "civilizovaných" římských autorů vůči "barbarským" Germánům, popřípadě jejich idealizace a komparace. Poslední část zmiňuje mimo jiné vliv křesťanství a pohanství na tehdejší společnost.

Abstract:

A bachelor thesis dealing with the origin, customs and mythology of the Germanic tribes in comparison with antique sources. The work deals with the arrival of the first Germans and their development in the eyes of ancient writers. The customs, way of life and influence of religion on Germanic society are not left out either. It is divided into four periods - The first mentions of the Germanic people, the Germans in the time of Tacitus and his contemporaries and followers, late antiquity and the period of Christianization. This work collects a large number of reports on Germanic manners, physical attributes, the relationship not only with the Roman Empire, but also mutual disputes and alliances, not to mention the contempt of "civilized" Roman authors for "barbaric" Germans, or their idealization and comparison. The last part mentions, among other things, the influence of Christianity and paganism on the society of that time.
