The Reliquary of St. Maurus in the History and the Present Time

Abstract:

Práce představuje relikviář sv. Maura v kontextu středověkých zlatnických objektů s náboženskou tématikou. Popisuje jednotlivé části relikviáře, zlatnické techniky a bohatý ikonografický program na emailových destičkách a reliéfech, který představuje příběhy ze života sv. Jan Křtitele, sv. Maura, sv. Apolináře a sv. Timoteje. Důraz je kladen na historii relikviáře, která začala ve 13. století ve Florennes v Belgii. Benediktinské opatství nechalo vytvořit relikviář pro vzácné relikvie, které vlastnilo. V roce 1838 byl relikviář prodán rodu Beaufort-Spontin a v roce 1889 byl převezen do Bečova nad Teplou, kde na konci druhé světové války zmizel. Detektivní pátrání po památce vedlo k jeho znovunalezení v roce 1985 v Bečově nad Teplou, kde je vystaven do dnes. Tato práce se zaměřuje především na rozsáhlé restaurování relikviáře, trvající 11 let, popisuje obsah tumbové skříně a kdo byli svatí, pro jejichž relikvie byl relikviář objednán. Hlavním bodem práce je popis proměny tohoto náboženského předmětu v kulturní exponát. Ve 13. století byl relikviář vyroben církví, ale v 19. století jej koupil rod Beaufort-Spontin a dostal se tak do soukromého vlastnictví. Třetím a posledním vlastníkem se stávám v roce 1985 stát. V poslední části práce představuje nejen současnou expozici relikviáře sv. Maura na zámku v Bečově, ale také popisuje chystanou novou interaktivní expozici v Pluhovských domech horního zámku Bečovského areálu.

Abstract:

The thesis presents the reliquary of St. Maurus in the context of medieval goldsmithing objects with a religious theme. It describes the individual parts of the reliquary, goldsmith technique and a rich iconographic program on enamel plates and reliefs, which presents stories of the life of St. John the Baptist, St. Maurus, St. Apollinare and St. Timothy. The next part focuses on the history of the reliquary, which began in the 13th century in Florennes, Belgium. The Benedictine abbey had a reliquary created for the rare relics it owned. In 1838 the reliquary was sold to the Beaufort-Spontin family and in 1889 it was transferred to Bečov nad Teplou, where it disappeared at the end of the Second World War. The detective search for the monument led to its rediscovery in 1985 in Bečov nad Teplou, where it has been exhibited to this day. The work also focuses on the extensive restoration of the reliquary lasting 11 years, describes the contents of the Tumb cabinet and who were the saints whose relics was the reliquary ordered for. Furthermore, the work describes the transformation of this religious object into a cultural exhibit. In the 13th century, the reliquary was made by the church, but in the 19th century, it was bought by the Beaufort-Spontin family and thus became private property. The state became the third and last owner in 1985. In the last part, besides the presentation of the current exhibition of the reliquary of St. Maurus at the chateau in Bečov, there is also the planned new interactive exhibition in the Pluhov houses of the upper chateau of the Bečov complex described.
