The impact of geopolitical shocks on the prices of precious metals

Abstract:

Komodity jsou součástí vytváření všeho na zemi, včetně jídla, energie, léků a dalších věcí nezbytných pro život. Je potřeba vidět změny cen surovin v ceně každého zboží nebo služby, kterou kupujeme. Práce se zaměřuje na vztah mezi geopolitickými událostmi a cenami zlata, stříbra a platiny v letech 2019 až 2024. Hlavním cílem je prozkoumat, jak historické ceny těchto kovů odrážejí dopady geopolitických změn na trh. Výsledky ukazují, že geopolitické události významně ovlivňují tržní ceny studovaných kovů. Zatímco zlato obecně reaguje na geopolitickou nejistotu zvýšením své ceny a zachovává si roli stabilizátoru, ceny platiny a stříbra vykazují komplexnější reakce v závislosti na jednotlivých událostech a globálních ekonomických faktorech. Pomocí lineární regresivní analýzy a Pearsonova korelačního koeficientu nejvyšší dosažená korelace byla zjištěna mezi platinou a geopolitickým indexem, kde násobné R dosahovalo 0,73368. Mezi zlatem a geopolitickým indexem násobné R dosáhlo hodnoty 0,61731 a mezi stříbrem a geopolitickým indexem násobné R bylo 0,60087. V práci je navíc poukázáno na několik omezení: nebyl plně zohledněn vliv dalších ekonomických a tržních faktorů, které mohou ovlivnit přesnost výsledků. Zjištění informují o dalším výzkumu, který by mohl integrovat další proměnné a rozšířit statistické metody, aby bylo možné hlouběji porozumět dynamice trhu drahých kovů.

Abstract:

Commodities are part of the creation of everything on earth, including food, energy, medicine and other things necessary for life. Changes in raw material prices need to be seen in the price of every good or service we buy. The thesis focuses on the relationship between geopolitical events and the prices of gold, silver and platinum from 2019 to 2024. The main objective is to examine how the historical prices of these metals reflect the impact of geopolitical changes on the market. The results show that geopolitical events significantly affect the market prices of the studied metals. While gold generally reacts to geopolitical uncertainty by increasing its price and maintaining its role as a stabilizer, platinum and silver prices show more complex reactions depending on individual events and global economic factors. Using linear regression analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient, the highest correlation achieved was found between platinum and the geopolitical index, where the multiple R reached 0.73368. Between gold and the geopolitical index, the R multiple reached 0.61731, and between silver and the geopolitical index, the R multiple was 0.60087. In addition, several limitations are pointed out in the work: the influence of other economic and market factors, which can affect the accuracy of the results, was not fully taken into account. The findings inform further research that could integrate additional variables and extend statistical methods to gain a deeper understanding of precious metals market dynamics.
