The Evolution and Effect of the Me Too Movement

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se snaží popsat a vysvětlit začátek, vývoj a dopad hnutí Me Too, které vzniklo s cílem upozornit a zároveň bojovat proti celospolečenskému problému sexuálního obtěžování a násilí. Začátek práce se věnuje původu fráze "metoo" a její autorce Taraně Burke stejně jako roku 2017, kdy se díky virálnímu Twitter příspěvku herečky Alyssy Milano dostalo hnutí do popředí všech médii. Práce dále nabízí detailní pohled do období úspěchů a růstu tohoto hnutí, ale i na negativní zpětnou reakci a kontroverzi, která tuto kampaň provází. Poslední část práce vysvětluje načasování tohoto hnutí a nabízí finální reflexi jeho vývoje a výhledu na jeho budoucnost. Hlavním cílem této práce je poskytnout objektivní, rozsáhlý a detailní souhrn informací o tomto hnutí, jeho přínosech a nedostatcích.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis attempts to describe and explain the beginning, evolution, and impact of the Me Too movement, which was created to draw attention to and simultaneously fight the social problem of sexual harassment and violence. The beginning of the thesis is devoted to the origin of the "metoo" phrase and its author Tarana Burke, as well as to the vital year of 2017, when thanks to the viral post of the actress Alyssa Milano on Twitter, the movement came to the forefront of all media. Furthermore, the work takes a detailed look at the period of successes and growth of the movement as well as at the negative backlash and controversy that this campaign received over the years. The last part of the work explains the timing of the movement and offers a final reflection on its development and moreover outlook on its future. This thesis aims to provide a complex, and detailed summary of information covering the Me Too movement, its accomplishments, and its weak points.
