Abstract:

Záměrem této studie je ukázat kognitivní mechanismy a popsat formy, ve kterých jsou užity v rituálním životě Svědků Jehovových a Kvakerů. Tyto náboženské skupiny se od sebe zásadně liší ve svém přístupu k náboženské praxi. Navíc obě skupiny vykonávají náboženské rituály, které slouží k podpoře a udržení náboženského života dané komunity. Kognitivní kapacity využívané oběma skupinami jsou zhodnoceny se zřetelem k teorii Lawsona a McCauleyho (1990). Studie dále naznačuje, že způsob, s jakým jsou tyto rituály prováděny, stejně jako jejich forma, může souviset s faktory, které rozhodují o rozdílu v počtu konvertitů, jejich retenci a veřejné známosti obou skupin (McCauley & Lawson, 2002).

Abstract:

This study aims to display cognitive mechanisms and describe forms in which they appear in rituals performed by Jehovah’s Witnesses’ religion (Witnesses) and Quakers’ religion, respectively. These religious groups differ from each other significantly in their approach to religious life. Moreover, both groups provide religious rituals that serve to sustain and strengthen the religious life of the particular community. Common cognitive capacities exploited by both groups are considered with regard to Lawson and McCauley’s theory (1990). It is tentatively indicated that presumably the way the rituals are executed, their content, notably the frequency with which they are executed as well as their ritual form, could be some of the factors accounting for differences in the number of converts/membership retention/public familiarity between these two groups (McCauley & Lawson, 2002).
