Boxer uprising in contemporary czech press: the reconstruction of the image of Boxer uprising in czech public and its comparison with historical facts

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jakým způsobem byla česká veřejnost informována o Boxerském povstání. Nejprve byla událost za pomocí sekundární literatury zasazena do širšího historického kontextu a následně detailně popsána na základě primárních zdrojů. Pro rekonstrukci událostí v Pekingu byly využity historické prameny v podobě deníků. K určení povědomí české veřejnosti o této historické události byla využita dvě česko-jazyčná periodika a to Lidové noviny a Národní listy. Výsledky určují do jaké míry a nakolik přesně informoval český dobový tisk své čtenáře.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis was to determine in what way was the Czech public informed about the Boxer uprising. First the event was put into a wider historical context using secondary sources and afterwards it was described in detail using archival sources. For the reconstruction of the events in Beijing historical primary sources in the form of diaries were used. To determine the awareness of Czech public of this historical event I used two Czech-language periodicals, namely Lidové noviny and Národní listy. The results show to what extent and how accurately contemporary Czech press informed its readers.
