Changes in emotion, distress and recognition function during the progress of a penitentiary employee’s career and interactions of these processes

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je součástí široce zaměřeného výzkumného projektu Centra pro komplexní psychologický výzkum stresu, který je postaven na týmové spolupráci deseti studentů Psychologického ústavu Masarykovy univerzity. Teoretická část práce se zabývá obecným vymezením pojmu kognitivní funkce, deskripcí jednotlivých poznávacích procesů a především jejich změnami v průběhu interakce s emocemi a stresovými situacemi. Základem empirické části je detailní analýza stresu, emocionality, pozornosti a kognitivního výkonu u 173 zaměstnanců vězeňské služby. Důraz je přitom kladen na zmapování vzájemné souvislosti těchto psychických procesů a na jejich změny v průběhu kariéry jedince v této pomáhající profesi. Statistickým zpracováním dat byly prokázány následující skutečnosti – 1) zaměstnanci věznic dosahují statisticky významně horšího kognitivního výkonu než lidé v rámci kontrolní skupiny, 2) specifické zaměstnání v rámci vězeňské služby a stres, který z něho plyne, jde ruku v ruce s negativním prožíváním, 3) s počtem let strávených v tomto specifickém zaměstnání roste riziko vzniku tzv. syndromu vyhoření.

Abstract:

This graduation thesis is part of a widely aimed research project of The Centre for complex psychological research of stress. It is based on the cooperation of ten students of the Psychological Institute at Masaryk´s university in Brno. In the theoretical part of the work, the general definition of the concept recognition function is discussed and also, individual recognition processes and their changes during interactions with emotional and stressful situations are described. The basis of the empirical part of the study is composed of a detailed analysis of stress, emotion, attention and the cognitive performance of 173 penitentiary employees with emphasis placed on mapping interactions of these mental processes and their changes throughout an individual’s career in this helping profession. Following statistical data processing the following statements have been proved; 1) statistically, significantly poorer cognitive performance was achieved by penitentiary employees than by subjects in the control group. 2) particular employment at penitentiary system created stress which is closely connected with negative emotion. 3) initiation risk of “burnout syndrome” increases with length-of-service in penitentiary employment.
