Outside the Academic Library: An Ethnographic Study of the Information Behavior of Eight Undergraduate Engineering Students

Abstract:

Tato práce popisuje metodologii, průběh a zjištění kombinovaného etnografického průzkumu osmi dejvických studentů techniky na bakalářském stupni. Cílem bylo prozkoumat kontext, v němž vybraní studenti zacházejí s informacemi a informačními zdroji při plnění studijních povinností. Použita byla kombinace tří metod sběru dat, a to hloubkových rozhovorů, virtuální etnografie a fotodeníků. Prostřednictvím použité metodologie se podařilo identifikovat řadu vzorců a příčin informačního chování specifické uživatelské skupiny, předchozími průzkumy nespatřených a/nebo nevyhodnocených. Zjištění mimo jiné ukázala na rozsáhlý jev sdílení studijních materiálů a zkušeností uvnitř zkoumaných komunit, zejména prostřednictvím sociálních sítí, na vysokou míru odkázanosti na online zdroje poskytované přímo příslušnou akademickou institucí, na časté využívání nelegálních kopií knih, článků a skript, na výraznou preferenci jednoduchého vyhledávání pomocí Googlu a na některé symptomatické příčiny opomíjení knihovních zdrojů a služeb. Výstupem této práce je návrh konkrétních doporučení pro zlepšení a rozvoj informačních služeb Národní technické knihovny zaměřených na specifické komunity studentů bakalářského stupně.

Abstract:

The thesis addresses the methodology, preparation, progress, and findings of ethnographic research carried out with eight undergraduate engineering students at the Dejvice Technology Campus in Prague. The aim was to examine the context in which these students deal with information and information resources while meeting their study requirements. Data gathering techniques included in-depth interviews, virtual ethnography (in the form of screenshots taken by research participants), and photo diaries. This methodological approach enabled identification of a number of information behavior patterns for the participant group that had not yet been recognized by previous researchers. The findings, among the other things, revealed: large-scale sharing of studying materials and student experiences within the surveyed communities, especially through the social networks; a high degree of reliance on online resources provided directly by students’ respective academic institutions; frequent use of illegally obtained copies of books, articles, and textbooks; a distinct preference for using Google basic search; and some symptomatic indications that students avoid or are unaware of library-provided information resources and services. The outcome of this study is a proposal containing recommendations for improving and further developing information services at the National Library of Technology in Prague for undergraduate students.
