Newcomers to farming: motivations and strategies in context of their life stories

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá nově příchozími do zemědělství z nezemědělského prostředí (newcomers). Zkoumá, jak se liší prvotní motivace a strategie newcomers oproti realitě hospodaření v jejich životních příbězích. Výsledky zasazuje do širšího kontextu hnutí back-to-the-land, politiky životního stylu a agrosociálního paradigmatu. Výzkumnou metodou je narativní analýza pěti newcomers z České republiky. Přání stát se zemědělcem se v životních příbězích objevovalo až po prohloubení environmentálního vědomí a ovlivnilo jej setkání s permakulturou. Realita hospodaření se lišila ve zkušenosti s fyzickou náročností ruční práce, rozporuplně romantickým vztahem k technologiím, úspěšností při budování komunit, přijetí okolními zemědělci a nutnou reorganizací místa a času. Prvotní motivace a strategie byly ve vnitřním konfliktu mezi pragmatismem a idealismem, který formoval celkové vyznění příběhů. Práce přináší prohloubení porozumění specifické skupiny českých zemědělců, kterým se akademická sféra věnuje okrajově, ačkoliv je na ně v současnosti směřovaná řada projektů v neziskovém sektoru.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with newcomers to agriculture from non-agricultural backgrounds. It explores how the initial motivations and strategies of newcomers differ from the realities of farming in their life stories. It places the findings in the broader context of back-to-the-land movement, lifestyle politics and the agrosocial paradigm. The research method is a narrative analysis of five newcomers from the Czech Republic. The wish to become a farmer emerged in their life stories after a deepening of environmental consciousness and was influenced by the encounter with permaculture. The realities of farming varied in the experience of the physical demands of manual labour, the contradictory romantic relationship with technology, the success in building communities, the acceptance by local farmers and the necessary reorganisation of place and time. Primary motivations and strategies were in internal conflict between pragmatism and idealism, which shaped the overall impression of the stories. The thesis brings a deep understanding of a specific group of Czech farmers who have received marginal attention in academic environment, although many projects in the non-profit sector are currently focused on them.
