Body image in the context of experienced levels of anxiety, depression and perfectionism during young adulthood

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce mapuje prostřednictvím kvantitativního výzkumného designu využívajícího jednorázového dotazníkového online šetření na neklinickém výzkumném souboru českých mladých dospělých (N = 1017, M = 26.9 %, Ž = 73.1 %) vztahy mezi body image, úzkostí, depresivitou a perfekcionismem. Práce v těchto vztazích zohledňuje také vliv genderu, věku, BMI, času tráveného na sociálních sítích a sociokulturních postojů ke vzhledu. Vybrané konstrukty byly měřeny skrze škály Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire – Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder – 7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) a Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire – 4 (SATAQ-4). Výsledky studie potvrdily body image jako prediktor úzkosti, depresivity a perfekcionismu. Zároveň také potvrdily perfekcionismus jako prediktor úzkosti a depresivity a jako moderátor posilující vztahy mezi body image, úzkostí a depresivitou. Při porovnávání genderových rozdílů byla pro ženy nalezena vyšší míra negativního body image a také jeho bližší souvislost s úzkostí, depresivitou a sociokulturními postoji ke vzhledu než pro muže. Výsledky dále prokázaly genderově podmíněnou rozdílnost ve struktuře sociokulturního tlaku na vzhled, kdy si muži více internalizovali ideál svalnatého těla a vnímali vyšší tlak vrstevníků na vzhled než ženy, zatímco ženy si více internalizovaly ideál hubeného těla a vnímaly vyšší tlak médií na vzhled než muži. Skrze výsledky studie byla prokázána významná provázanost body image, úzkosti, depresivity a perfekcionismu, kdy bylo body image potvrzeno jako významný prediktor duševního zdraví u mladých dospělých. Výsledky studie mají přesah zejména do klinického a terapeutického prostředí.

Abstract:

The presented master’s thesis analyses the relationships between body image, anxiety, depression and perfectionism in a non-clinical sample of Czech young adults (N = 1017, M = 26.9 %, F = 73.1 %) through a quantitative research design using a one-time online survey. The study also includes the influence of gender, age, BMI, time spent on social media and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance on the selected relationships. The selected constructs were measured through the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire - Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) and Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire – 4 (SATAQ-4). The results of the study confirmed body image as a predictor of anxiety, depression and perfectionism. Simultaneously, perfectionism was confirmed as a predictor of anxiety and depression and as a moderator strengthening the relationships between body image, anxiety and depression. Looking at gender differences, a higher level of negative body image was found in women as well as its closer connection with anxiety, depression and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance than in men. The results further showed a difference in the structure of sociocultural pressure on appearance, where men internalized the muscular body ideal more and perceived higher peer pressure on appearance than women, while women internalized the thin body ideal more and perceived higher media pressure on appearance than men. The results showed a significant interconnection between body image, anxiety, depression and perfectionism, where body image was confirmed as an important predictor of mental health in young adults. The results are mainly relevant for practical use in the field of clinical and therapeutic care.
