Ways of seeing androgyny: Confronting the alternative

Abstract:

Tato práce konfrontuje způsoby rozpoznávání androgynie a hledá její současnou definici. Práce představuje vícero přístupů ke studiu androgynie. Androgyny je konfrontován se základními pojmy, které ustavují západní kulturu, a tak zpochybňuje rutinní, nezpochybňovaný základ kategorie genderu. "Způsoby vidění" jsou metaforou vztaženou k vizualitě, která tvoří hlavní linku celé této práce. Hlavními tématy této práce jsou: Androgynie ve vztahu k západnímu kulturnímu nastavení; koncept androgynie v konfrontaci s mezikulturním rozlišováním genderu; a rozeznávání androgynie v západní kultuře, ukázaná na vizuální analýze módního editorialu časopisu Vogue. Tato práce tedy představuje androgynii jako alternativu v rámci západní kultury a současně jako alternativní pohled z vně této kultury. Toto zpracování přináší odpovědi na definici androgynie, její široké aplikovatelnosti na sociální jevy, a její reprezentace.

Abstract:

This work confronts ways of recognizing androgyny and seeks its contemporary definition. The thesis presents multiple approaches to study androgyny. Androgyny is confronted with the basic concepts constituting Western culture and so challenges the routine, undoubted basis of categories of gender. The "ways of seeing" metaphorically relate to the visuality, which constitutes the main line throughout this work. Core topics to this paper are: Androgyny in relation to Western cultural setting; concept of androgyny in confrontation with cross-cultural gender variance; and recognition of androgyny in Western culture, demonstrated in a visual analysis of Vogue magazine fashion editorial. This thesis therefore presents androgyny as an alternative within Western culture and simultaneously as an alternative view from outside this culture. Resultant elaboration brings answers to definition of androgyny, its wide applicability on social phenomena, and its representations.
