Representation and self-presentation of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in American electronic media

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor's thesis was to describe the ways in which members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) are portrayed in American electronic media. The work focused on linguistic means and visual elements in their media self-presentation and representation. The theoretical part defines the key concepts of Mormons, electronic media, representation and self-presentation with a focus on the Mormon Church. Linguistic means, their functions, emotional coloring and connotations were analyzed. The visual analysis was based on the theory of Kress and van Leeuwen, focused on composition, colors, symbols and stereotypes, and attention was also paid to clothing and aesthetic elements as carriers of meaning. The in-depth interview with church members was analyzed, interpreted and compared with their online self-presentation. The obtained results show that linguistic and visual means significantly shape the interpretation of media messages. The analysis suggests a tension between personal identity and the public image of the church and its media self-presentation.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo popsat způsoby zobrazování členů Církve Ježíše Krista svatých posledních dnů (mormonů) v amerických elektronických médiích. Práce se zaměřila na jazykové prostředky a vizuální prvky v jejich mediální sebeprezentaci a reprezentaci. V teoretické části jsou vymezeny klíčové pojmy mormoni, elektronická média, reprezentace a sebeprezentace se zaměřením na mormonskou církev. Vizuální analýza vycházela z teorie Kresse a van Leeuwena, soustředila se na kompozici, barvy, symboly a stereotypy a pozornost byla věnována také oděvu a estetickým prvkům jako nositelům významu. Hloubkový rozhovor s členy církve byl analyzován, interpretován a porovnán s jejich online sebeprezentací. Získané výsledky ukazují, že jazykové i vizuální prostředky významně formují interpretaci mediálního sdělení. Analýza naznačuje napětí mezi osobní identitou a veřejným obrazem církve a její mediální sebeprezentací.
