Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou lidského svědomí v románu Čekání na barbary (Waiting for the Barbarians) významného jihoafrického autora Johna Maxwella Coetzeeho. Tento problém, který je centrálním tématem románu, se stává předmětem spojení s globálním pojetím díla a bude zkoumán prostřednictvím analýzy duševního vývoje bezejmenného hlavního protagonisty zastávajícího pozici smírčího soudce v pohraniční pevnosti, jehož vnitřní proměna je způsobena tlakem vědomí o mučení probíhající pod jeho záštitou, jehož objektem se posléze stává sám. Tato analýza a interpretace s důrazem na úzké téma svědomí se opírá o autorovy vlastní názory uvedené v ne příliš častých rozhovorech a v jeho publikovaných esejích a o dalších kritické studie zabývajících se Coetzeeho tvorbou. Cílem práce je poukázat na centrální téma lidského svědomí jakožto prvku spojujícího román s jakýmkoliv člověkem napříč světem i historií.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of human conscience in the novel Waiting for the Barbarians by a significant South African author John Maxwell Coetzee. This issue, which is the central theme of the novel, becomes an object of connection to the global interpretation of the work and will be explored through the analysis of mental development of a nameless main protagonist who holds the position of a magistrate in a frontier fortress and whose inner transformation is caused by the pressure stemming from awareness of torture practiced under his patronage, the torture which he eventually becomes an object of. The analysis and interpretation with emphasis on narrow theme of conscience is based on the author?s own opinions presented in his rare interviews and published essays and on other critic analysis dealing with Coetzee?s work. The thesis also seeks to examine the central theme of human conscience as the element connecting the novel with any human being throughout the world as well as history.
