Understanding of the term relion among New Atheists

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá způsobem, jakým hnutí nového ateismu chápe a pracuje s pojmem „náboženství“. Jejím cílem je prokázat hypotézu, podle které je pohled nového ateismu formován primárními cíli jejich kritiky – fundamentalistickými hnutími v rámci hlavních náboženství euroamerického okruhu, křesťanství, islámu a judaismu. Jako důkaz této hypotézy na základě zkoumání prací čtyř hlavních autorů nového ateismu, Richarda Dawkinse, Daniela Dennetta, Sama Harrise a Christophera Hitchense vytváří tato práce model náboženství, se kterým noví ateisté ve své argumentaci pracují. Tento model popisuje, jaké prvky a způsob chování noví ateisté od náboženství očekávají, a je složen z pěti částí. Tyto části jsou: Bůh, posvátný text, systém pravidel pro chod společnosti, vědomosti o podobě a fungování světa, a vztah k okolí. Náboženství, které nejlépe odpovídá tomuto modelu, lze shrnout jako monoteismus s literalisticky chápaným posvátným textem, jehož Bůh je stvořitelem světa. Typickým příkladem takového náboženství jsou křesťanská a islámská fundamentalistická hnutí. Je tedy zřejmé, že tento model, a nový ateismus jako takový, vychází ve svém chápání náboženství z těchto skupin.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the way the New Atheism movement understands, and works with, the term „religion“. It aims to prove the hypothesis that New Atheism understands religion in terms of the primary target of their critique, that is fundamentalist groups within the most influential religions of the USA and Europe – Christianity, Islam and Judaism. As a proof of this hypothesis, this work suggests a model of religion that New Atheism uses in it's argumentation. This model describes which elements and behavior patterns New Atheists expect from a religion. It consists of five parts: a God, a holy scripture, a social order, a system of knowledge of the universe and it's mechanisms, and a relationship with the rest of the society. The type of religious group that best fits this model is a monotheism based on a literalistic reading of a holy scripture, where the deity is also the creator of the universe. This kind of religion is best exemplified by current Christian and Islamic fundamentalisms. Thus, it is clear that this model, and consequently the New Atheism as a whole, derives it's understanding of religion from these groups.
