Ecology of lichens on deglaciated parts of James Ross Island, the Antarctic

Abstract:

V této práci je studována ekologie velmi rozšířeného a abundantního lišejníku Usnea sp. na ostrově Jamese Rosse v Antarktidě. Byl zvolen komplexní přístup ke studiu fenoménu tohoto druhu v antarktickém terestrickém ekosystému. Byla vyvinuta nedestruktivní metoda určení biomasy lišejníkového společenstva. Metoda je založena na jednoduchém terénním měření s použitím upravených botanických čtverců a digitální fotografie experimentální plochy. Metodu lze použít na podobná lišejníková společenstva. Další část výzkumu byla zaměřena na šíření lišejníků na mesetách ostrova Jamese Rosse. Pro tento účel byl založen jednoduchý experiment na mesetách Berry Hill a Lachman Crags v bezprostřední blízkosti ustupujícího čela ledovce. Bylo zjištěno, že i velmi mladé odledněné části jsou pomalu osidlovány lišejníky. Pro lepší porozumění dopadům mikroklimatických a vlhkostních změn na některé antarktické kryptogamy, byl založen dlouhodobý experiment na Johnson mesetě simulující tyto změny způsobené současnou změnou klimatu. Pro tento účel byly použity tzv. „open-top chambers“ – malé otevřené plexi skleníky jako spolehlivá metoda pro simulování těchto změn. Sněhové přehrádky byly vůbec poprvé použity v prostředí antarktického terestrického ekosystému.

Abstract:

The ecology of widespread and abundant lichen Usnea sp. present on James Ross Island in the Antarctic is studied in this thesis. The complex approach was used to study the phenomenon of this species in the Antarctic terrestrial ecosystem. The method for non-destructive estimation of lichen biomass was developed. The method is based on simple field measuring with the use of modified botanical square and digital photography of the experimental plots. The method can be used on similar lichen communities. Furthermore, the focus of other work was on lichen dispersal over the James Ross Island mesas. For this purpose, the simple field experiment was established on Berry Hill and Lachman Crags mesa in the vicinity of newly deglaciated parts. It was found out that even very young deglaciated bare grounds are slowly settled by lichens. For better understanding of microclimate and humidity changes on particular Antarctic cryptogam communities caused by recent climate changes, the long-term experiment simulating temperature increase and humidity changes was established on Johnson mesa. Open-top chambers were used as a reliable method for simulating these changes. Snow barriers were used for the first time in the Antarctic terrestrial ecosystem.
