Comparative analysis of the competitiveness of selected cities in Central and Western Europe

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na komparativní analýzu konkurenceschopnosti vybraných měst střední a západní Evropy na základě zhodnocení vybraných ukazatelů dle nejnovějších aktuálně dostupných dat. Pro tuto analýzu byla vybrána Praha, Varšava, Bratislava, Manchester, Hamburk a Vídeň. Teoretická část práce formou rozsáhlé rešeršní analýzy odborné literatury vymezuje pojem konkurenceschopnost na makroekonomické, mikroekonomické, regionální a městské úrovni a shrnuje dosavadní metodologické přístupy k jejímu hodnocení a měření. Tato část je doplněna o teoretické aspekty konkurenceschopnosti v oblasti demografické a environmentální a o shrnutí vybraných indexů hodnotících konkurenceschopnost měst. V praktické části práce jsou města porovnávána na základě vybraných ukazatelů ze socioekonomické, demografické a environmentální oblasti, což je doplněno komplexním zhodnocením jejich konkurenceschopnosti v podobě souhrnného indexu inspirovaného indexem konkurenceschopnosti vytvořeným Robertem Hugginsem. Obsahem této části práce je také výsledné zhodnocení konkurenceschopnosti vybraných měst ve zmíněných oblastech prostřednictvím identifikace jejich silných a slabých stránek a v případě Prahy i příležitostí a hrozeb.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on the comparative analysis of the competitiveness of selected cities within Central and Western Europe based on evaluation of selected indicators according to the latest available data. The cities chosen for this analysis were Prague, Warsaw, Bratislava, Manchester, Hamburg and Vienna. The theoretical part of the thesis defines the concept of competitiveness at the macroeconomic, microeconomic, regional and urban level in the form of extensive research of expert literature and summarizes the methodological approaches to its evaluation and measurement. This part is supplemented by the theoretical aspects of competitiveness in demographic and environmental terms and by the summaries of selected indicators assessing the competitiveness of cities. In the practical part of the thesis, cities are compared on the basis of selected socio-economic, demographic and environmental indicators, complemented by a comprehensive assessment of their competitiveness in the form of a composite index inspired by the competitiveness index created by Robert Huggins. This part of the thesis also contains the final evaluation of the competitiveness of selected cities in the mentioned areas by identifying their strengths and weaknesses and, in the case of Prague, opportunities and threats.
