The Colles distal radial fracture rehabilitation protocol: case report

Abstract:

The Colles fracture is one of the most common fractures found in orthopedic practice. Colles fracture is defined as a distal radius fracture with comminution, dorsal angulation and displacement, radial shortening, and an associated fracture of the ulnar styloid. The term Colles fracture is often used for distal fractures with dorsal angulation. These distal radius fractures can predominantly be caused by falling on an outstretched hand with the wrist in dorsiflexion, causing strain on the volar aspect of the wrist, causing the fracture to extend dorsally. Depending on the severity of the fracture, conservative treatment can be proceeded in less severe cases, while in more severe cases osteosynthesis surgery will be required. Following an osteosynthesis with plates and screws, physiotherapy visits and targeted exercises will be assigned for the recovery of the joint ROM (Range of Motion) and for the complete recovery of joint function.

Abstract:

La frattura di Colles ? una delle fratture pi? comuni riscontrate nella pratica ortopedica. La frattura di Colles ? definita come una frattura del radio distale con comminuzione, angolazione e spostamento dorsale, accorciamento radiale e frattura associata dello stiloide ulnare. Il termine frattura di Colles ? spesso usato per le fratture distali con angolazione dorsale. Queste fratture del radio distale possono essere causate prevalentemente dalla caduta su una mano tesa con il polso in flessione dorsale, provocando tensione sull'aspetto volare del polso, provocando l'estensione dorsale della frattura. In base alla gravit? della frattura si pu? procedere con il trattamento conservativo nei casi meno gravi, mentre nei casi pi? gravi si dovr? procedere con un intervento di osteosintesi. A seguito di un intervento di osteosintesi con placche e viti verranno assegnate visite fisioterapiche ed esercizi mirati per il recupero del ROM (Range of Motion) articolare e per la ripresa completa della funzionalit? articolare.
