Study of low-pressure hysteresis upon gas sorption on porous materials

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce byla zaměřena na studium nízkotlaké hystereze při sorpcích plynů a objasnění příčiny vzniku tohoto jevu na porézních pevných materiálech. Syntetizované monolity na bázi resorcinolu a formaldehydu (oxidovaný STR1/1 a STR1/1 + 10 % GO) a celulózy (CMG-500 a CMG-900) byly zkoumány pomocí fyzisorpčních měření N2, CO2 a Ar, a také pomocí termomechanické analýzy. V rámci těchto fyzisorpčních měření bylo zkoumáno několik vlivů, které by mohly souviset s přítomností nízkotlaké hystereze na těchto materiálech, jednalo se tedy o vliv fyzikálního stavu vzorku (monolitická kostka, prášek), adsorpční teploty, vliv teploty sušení vzorku před samotnou adsorpcí (od 60-350 °C), flexibilita materiálu a kinetické restrikce při kryogenních adsorpčních teplotách (-196 a-186 °C). Na oxidovaném uhlíkatém monolitu STR1/1 byl potvrzen vliv adsorpční teploty na nízkotlakou hysterezi. Zvýšením adsorpční teploty se přítomná nízkotlaká hystereze snižovala. Také byl na tomto vzorku potvrzen i vliv teploty sušení. Při zvýšení této teploty se výrazně snížila nízkotlaká hystereze, a zároveň se také výrazně zvýšilo adsorbované množství plynu ve vzorku. Z dalších sorpčních měření N2 provedených na vzorcích neoxidovaného STR1/1 a lignitu vyplývá, že vliv teploty sušení tohoto materiálu na nízkotlakou hysterezi pravděpodobně souvisí s přítomností heteroatomů na povrchu vzorku. U vzorků na bází celulózy (CMG-500 a CMG-900) nebyl prokázán žádný z těchto vlivů na nízkotlakou hysterezi, proto byla provedena další sorpční měření CO2 na termogravimetrickém analyzátoru pro ověření vlivu flexibility materiálu na přítomnost nízkotlaké hystereze. Výsledky sorpčních měření získané pomocí termomechanické analýzy však nepotvrdily tuto hypotézu. Během dalších sorpčních měřeních Ar a CO2 na vzorcích CMG-500 a CMG-900 při různých adsorpčních teplotách bylo zjištěno, že by přítomnost nízkotlaké hystereze u materiálů na bázi celulózy s největší pravděpodobností souvisí s kinetickými restrikcemi v úzkých mikropórech materiálu při nízkých kryogenních adsorpčních teplotách.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis was focused on the study of low pressure hysteresis in gas sorption and clarification of the cause of this phenomenon on porous solid materials. The synthesized carbon-based monoliths (oxidized STR1/1 and STR1/1 + 10% GO) and cellulose-based monoliths (CMG-500 and CMG-900) were investigated by N2, CO2 and Ar physisorption measurements as well as thermomechanical analysis. As part of these physisorption measurements, several effects that could be related to the presence of low-pressure hysteresis in these materials were investigated, these included the effect of the physical state of the sample (monolithic cube, powder), the adsorption temperature, the effect of the drying temperature of the sample prior to adsorption (60-350 °C), the flexibility of the materiál and the kinetic limitations at cryogenic adsorption temperatures (-196 and -186 °C). The effect of adsorption temperature on the low-pressure hysteresis was confirmed on the oxidized carbon monolith STR1/1. By increasing the adsorption temperature, the present low pressure hysteresis decreased. The effect of drying temperature was also confirmed on this sample. When the drying temperature was increased, the low-pressure hysteresis decreased significantly, while the amount of gas adsorbed in the sample also increased significantly. Further N2 sorption measurements performed on samples of unoxidized STR1/1 and lignite indicate that the effect of drying temperature of this material on the low-pressure hysteresis is probably related to the presence of heteroatoms on the sample surface. For the cellulose-based samples (CMG-500, CMG-900), neither of these effects on low-pressure hysteresis was demonstrated, so additional CO2 sorption measurements were performed on a thermogravimetric analyzer to verify the effect of material flexibility on the presence of low-pressure hysteresis. However, the results of the sorption measurements obtained by thermomechanical analysis did not support this hypothesis. During further sorption measurements of Ar and CO2 on CMG-500 and CMG-900 samples at different adsorption temperatures, it was found that the presence of low-pressure hysteresis in cellulose-based materials would most likely be related to kinetic restrictions in the narrow micropores of the material at low cryogenic adsorption temperatures.
