Parasocial friendships with media personalities: clarifying the substitution hypothesis

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce je ověřit užitečnost substituční hypotézy v kontextu parasociálních vztahů. Konkrétně je zjišťováno, zda existuje souvislost mezi sociální osamělostí a intenzitou parasociálního přátelství (PSF) s mediální osobností. Zkoumáno je také, zda PSF souvisí ve větší míře s deficity v odpovídající kamarádské oblasti oproti romantické oblasti. Dále je zkoumán moderační vliv typu osobnosti a pohlaví diváka. Dotazníkového šetření se zúčastnilo 391 respondentů ve věku 18 až 30 let (82,4 % žen). Nenalezli jsme významný vztah mezi sociální osamělostí a parasociálním přátelstvím a ani jeden z moderačních efektů také nebyl nalezen.

Abstract:

The main goal of the bachelor thesis is to clarify the usefulness of the substitution hypothesis in the context of parasocial relationships. Specifically, the association between social loneliness and the intensity of parasocial friendship (PSF) with media personalities is investigated. It is also examined whether PSF is associated to a greater extent with deficits in corresponding friendship area compared to romantic area. Furthermore, the moderation effect of media personality type and viewer gender was examined. Survey was completed by 391 respondents aged 18 to 30 (82,4 % women). No significant relationship between social loneliness and parasocial friendship and no moderation effect was found.
