Molecular simulations of aqueous electrolyte solutions

Abstract:

Tato dizertační práce se věnuje studiu vodných roztoků elektrolytů pomocí molekulárních simulací se zaměřením na porozumění vlivu mezimolekulárních interakcí na mikroskopickou strukturu a termodynamické vlastnosti těchto roztoků jak v~objemové části, tak na fázových rozhraních. Práce je souhrnem publikací autora týkajících se studia základních typů mezimolekulárních interakcí při vývoji přesných modelů elektrolytů, výzkumu vlivu nekovalentních vazeb na strukturu a~chování roztoků elektrolytů na rozhraních s grafenem a~metod identifikace a popisu nekovalentních mezimolekulárních vazeb. V první části jsou pomocí nově vyvinuté parametrizační strategie vylepšeny iont--iont interakce polarizovatelných modelů solí halogenidů alkalických kovů AH/BK3 pro přesné simulace vodných roztoků těchto solí, včetně fázových rovnováh. Toho je dosaženo nepřímým cílením na výpočetně a~technicky náročné veličiny, jakými jsou chemický potenciál krystalu a~hodnota rozpustnosti, za pomoci fyzikálních předpokladů a~aproximací souvisejících s~krystalickou strukturou bezvodých krystalů a~souvislostí iont--iont párování s~hodnotou rozpustnosti. V druhé části je vyvinuta nová metoda pro identifikaci a~studium nekovalentních vazeb pomocí molekulárních simulací. Tato metoda využívá prostorových distribučních funkcí pro identifikaci vazebné oblasti. Oproti běžně používaným geometrickým definicím nevyžaduje volbu vhodných vzdálenostních a~úhlových kritérií a~jejich mezních hodnot. Metoda navíc poskytuje další informace o~vazbě, včetně její síly a~je použitelná za libovolných termodynamických podmínek. Poslední část této práce se věnuje studiu chování elektrolytů na rozhraních s~neutrálním i~nabitým grafenem. Tato rozhraní mají širokou škálu technologických uplatnění a~další pokrok je závislý na míře porozumění jejich chování na mikroskopické úrovni. Jsou vypočteny integrální charakteristiky adsorpce, difuze a~elektrostatických vlastností těchto rozhraní. Mikroskopická struktura je podrobena důkladné analýze, včetně studia mezimolekulárních vazeb pomocí nové metodiky. Jsou identifikovány důležité hnací síly v~těchto systémech a~jejich vliv na specifické chování iontů. Závěry jsou dostatečně obecné pro aplikaci na jiné nabité povrchy a~na nich vznikající elektrochemické dvojvrstvy.

Abstract:

This dissertation studies aqueous electrolyte solutions using molecular simulations with a focus on understanding the influence of intermolecular interactions on the microscopic structure and thermodynamic properties of these solutions both in the bulk and at the phase interfaces. This thesis is a compilation of the author's publications related to the study of the basic types of intermolecular interactions in the development of accurate models of electrolytes, the investigation of the influence of non-covalent bonds on the structure and behavior of electrolyte solutions at interfaces with graphene, and methods of identification and description of non-covalent intermolecular bonds. In the first part, ion--ion interaction of polarizable models of alkali metal halide salts AH/BK3 are improved using a newly developed parameterization strategy for accurate simulations of aqueous solutions of these salts, including phase equilibria. This is achieved by indirectly targeting computationally and technically demanding quantities such as the chemical potential of the anhydrous crystal and the solubility using physical assumptions and approximations related to the crystalline structure of anhydrous crystals and the impact of ion--ion pairing on the solubility value. In the second part, a new method is developed for the identification and study of non-covalent bonds using molecular simulations. This method uses spatial distribution functions for the identification of the bonding region. Unlike commonly used geometric definitions, it does not require a selection of suitable distance and angle criteria and their cut-off values. The method provides additional information about the bond including its strength and is also applicable under arbitrary thermodynamic conditions. The last part of this work studies the behavior of electrolytes at interfaces with neutral and charged graphene. These interfaces have a wide range of technological applications and their further development is dependent on the degree of our understanding of their propeperties at a microscopic level. Integral characteristics of adsorption, diffusion and electrostatic properties of these interfaces are calculated. The microscopic structure is subjected to a thorough analysis, including the study of intermolecular bonds using newly proposed methodology. Important driving forces in these systems and their effect on specific ion behavior are identified. The conclusions are general enough for application to other charged surfaces and adjacent electrochemical double layer.
