Weight bias internalization

Abstract:

Internalizace stigmatu ohledně vyšší tělesné hmotnosti je proces aplikování negativních postojů a stereotypů ohledně vyšší hmotnosti na sebe sama. Tato internalizace bývá pravidelně spojována se horším psychickým i fyzickým zdravím. Cílem této studie bylo posoudit vztahy mezi internalizací stigmatu a psychickým i fyzickým fungováním. Celkem 70 dospělých pacientů obezitologie vyplnilo škálu zjišťující míru internalizace stigmatu ohledně hmotnosti a další dotazníky zkoumající psychické i fyzické fungování. Byl nalezen pozitivní vztah mezi internalizací stigmatu a hmotností, depresivitou, úzkostí, patologií v jídelním chováním a obecným psychickým distresem. Mezi internalizací a kvalitou života byla nalezena negativní asociace. Ženy dosahovaly vyšší míry internalizace a internalizace stigmatu se ukázala jako signifikantní prediktor depresivity.

Abstract:

Weight bias internalization is the process of applying negative weight-related attitudes and stereotypes to oneself. Weight bias internalization has been previously associated with depressive symptoms, anxiety, low self-esteem and eating disturbances. This study aims to assess relationships between weight bias internalization and markers of mental and physical health. Seventy adults seeking obesity treatment (BMI: m=38,59; SD=8,35) completed measure of weight bias internalization, along with assessment of other psychological factors (depression, anxiety, quality of life, eating behaviours, psychological distress etc.) and physical variables (sleep quality, physical activity, body fat percentage etc.). The average WBIS-M score was 3,89 ± 1,40. Internalized weight bias was significantly higher among women, and no associations between self-stigma and age or education were found. WBIS-M scores were positively associated with depression, anxiety, eating pathology and psychological distress. Self-stigma was negatively associated with quality of life.
