Intercultural communication in social work with refugees

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřená na téma interkulturní komunikace, a to v rámci sociální práce s uprchlíky. Cílem práce a výzkumu je analyzovat, jakým způsobem dochází k efektivní interkulturní komunikaci mezi sociálním pracovníkem a uprchlíkem a co tuto komunikaci ovlivňuje. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a část výzkumnou. Teoretická část obsahuje popis interkulturní komunikace, kultury a interkulturních nedorozumění. Dále se zabývá migrací, rozdílem mezi pojmy migrant a uprchlík, cizineckou legislativou v České republice, stereotypy, předsudky či diskriminací a také integrací uprchlíků do společnosti. Druhá polovina teoretické části je o sociální práci s cílovou skupinou uprchlíků. Popisuje principy a cíle sociální práce, interkulturní komunikaci jako součást této práce a interkulturní práci. Na závěr je vymezena sociální práce v azylových zařízeních a v neziskových organizacích. Pro výzkumnou část je zvolena hlavní výzkumná otázka a tři dílčí výzkumné otázky. Hlavní výzkumná otázka je zjistit, co přispívá k efektivní interkulturní komunikaci v sociální práci s uprchlíky. V návaznosti na to se dílčí výzkumné otázky týkají znalostí a schopností sociálních pracovníků, bariér a překážek v sociální práci s uprchlíky a jak nahlíží na tuto práci s lidmi odlišného původu sami sociální pracovníci. K naplnění cíle a k odpovědi na zmíněné otázky je zvolena kvalitativní výzkumná strategie a pro sběr dat technika polostrukturovaných rozhovorů realizovaných se sociálními pracovníky ve státních a nestátních organizacích v městě Ostrava. Data jsou analyzována otevřeným kódováním a interpretována výzkumnou metodou vytváření trsů. Poslední kapitola obsahuje shrnutí výsledků výzkumu včetně odpovědí na hlavní a dílčí výzkumné otázky.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is focused on the topic of intercultural communication within social work with refugees. The aim of the thesis and research is to analyze how effective intercultural communication between social worker and refugee occurs and what influences this communication. The thesis is divided into theoretical part and research part. The theoretical part contains description of intercultural communication, culture and intercultural misunderstandings. Furthermore, it deals with migration, the difference between the concepts of migrant and refugee, foreign legislation in the Czech republic, stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination and the integration of refugees into society. The second half of the theoretical part is about social work with the target group of refugees. It describes the principles and objectives of social work, intercultural communication as part of this work and intercultural work. Finally, social work in asylum facilities and non-profit organizations is defined. The main research question and three sub-research questions are chosen for the research part. The main research question is to find out what contributes to effective intercultural communication in social work with refugees. In relation to this, the sub-research questions relate to the knowledge and skills of social workers, barriers and obstacles in social work with refugees and how social workers themselves view this work with people from different backgrounds. In order to fulfill the objective and to answer the questions above, a qualitative research strategy has been chosen and a semi-structured interview technique conducted with social workers in state or non-state organizations in the city of Ostrava has been used for data collection. The data are analyzed by open coding and interpreted by the research method of clustering. The last chapter contains a summary of the research results including answers to the main and sub-research questions.
