Developing a methodology for the inclusion of Metadata Sources in the Central Portal of Czech Libraries

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské diplomové práce je příprava návrhu metodiky, v níž budou formulovány pokyny pro zapojení knihovních i neknihovních metadatových zdrojů do Centrálního portálu knihoven. Práce se člení na tři části. První kapitola obsahuje popis teoretického kontextu navrhované metodiky, rozbor standardů používaných pro práci s metadaty a přehled softwarových nástrojů umožňujících fungování Centrálního portálu knihoven. Druhá kapitola porovnává portál s dalšími službami prohledávajícími informační zdroje českých knihoven, identifikuje typy metadatových zdrojů vhodných k zapojení do portálu, popisuje proces zpracování metadat zapojených zdrojů a shrnuje obsah existujících dokumentů s tematikou blízkou připravované metodice. Samotný návrh metodiky je předložen ve třetí kapitole. Návrh vychází ze zkušeností se zapojováním metadatových zdrojů, které jsou již začleněny do Centrálního portálu knihoven, a je doplněn o poznatky rozebírané v přecházejících kapitolách. Na jeho základě bude možné vypracovat metodiku, která dodá poskytovatelům metadat dostatek informací k zapojení jejich metadatového zdroje do Centrálního portálu knihoven.

Abstract:

The aim of the Bachelor's thesis is to work out a proposal for a methodology that will enable instructions for the inclusion of library and non-library metadata sources in the Central Portal of Czech Libraries to be formulated. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first chapter contains a description of the theoretical context of the proposed methodology, an analysis of the standards used for working with metadata and an overview of the software tools that enable the Central Portal of Czech Libraries to function. The second chapter compares the Portal with other services searching the information sources of Czech libraries, identifies the types of metadata sources suitable for inclusion in the Portal, describes how the metadata of sources that are included are processed and provides a summary of the content of existing documents whose topic is close to the methodology that has been worked out. The actual methodology that is being proposed forms the third chapter. The proposal is based on experience gained from the process by which metadata sources have already been included in the Central Portal of Czech Libraries, and is supplemented by findings analyzed in the previous chapters. This can serve as the basis for working out a methodology that will offer suppliers of metadata enough information to enable their metadata sources to be included in the Central Portal of Czech Libraries.
