UEFA’s concept of financial control Financial Fair Play

Abstract:

Tématem této bakalářské práce je koncept finanční kontroly evropských fotbalových klubů Financial Fair Play asociace UEFA. Práce představuje principy konceptu a jeho chronologický vývoj. Cílem práce je zjistit, zdali má koncept v průběhu času vliv na finanční zdraví fotbalových klubů. V závěru řešení jsou navrženy změny konceptu s ohledem na výsledky analýzy a s ohledem na strategické cíle organizace UEFA.K řešení byla využita sekundární analýza dat účetních výkazů fotbalových klubů Manchester United FC a Celtic FC. Pro účely práce byly zpracovány jejich účetní výkazy fotbalových sezon 2010/2011 až 2017/2018. Data byly podrobeny finančním analytickým ukazatelům, které určily finanční zdraví klubů v jednotlivých sezonách. Výsledky byly vyhodnoceny komparativní analýzou s cílem zjištění pozitivního trendu výsledků, jenž by značil splnění efektivity konceptu. Provedenou analýzou bylo zjištěno, že finanční zdraví vybraných klubů není ovlivněno regulacemi konceptu Financial Fair Play. Finanční zdraví fotbalového klubu Manchester United FC je dle vybraných ukazatelů na pokraji bankrotu a to ve všech zkoumaných obdobích. Celtic FC a jeho finanční zdraví je závislé na sportovních výsledcích a meziroční kontinuitě výnosů. Základním návrhem změny konceptu Financial Fair Play je diverzifikace platných regulací pro jednotlivé kluby a to na základě jejich velikosti. Hlavním zjištěním této bakalářské práce je, že koncept finanční kontroly Financial Fair Play nemá dle sekundární analýzy dat vliv na finanční zdraví vybraných fotbalových klubů. Na základě zjištěných údajů byly navrženy změny konceptu zefektivňující jeho podstatu.

Abstract:

The topic of this bachelor thesis is the UEFA’s concept of financial control of European football clubs called Financial Fair Play. The thesis presents principles of the concept and its chronological development. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the influence of the concept on the financial health of football clubs. Afterwards, changes of the concept are proposed with respect to the results of the analysis and the strategic goals of the UEFA.A secondary analysis of the financial statements’ data of Manchester United FC and Celtic FC. For the purposes of the thesis, their financial statements for the football season 2010/2011 to 2017/2018 were analysed. The data were subjected to financial analytical indicators that determined the financial health of clubs in the seasons. The results were evaluated by a comparative analysis with a purpose of finding out a positive trend of results that would indicate the fulfilment of the concept's effectiveness.The analysis revealed that the financial health of selected clubs is not influenced by the Financial Fair Play concept. The financial health of Manchester United FC is, according to selected indicators, on the verge of bankruptcy in all of the chosen periods. Celtic FC’s financial health is dependent on sport results and year-on-year revenue continuity. Proposed changes of the Financial Fair Play concept are based on the diversification of the applicable regulations for individual clubs based on their size.The main finding of this bachelor thesis is that the Financial Fair Play Financial Control concept does not have a financial impact on selected football clubs, according to the secondary data analysis. On the basis of the findings, changes to the concept have been proposed to make it more efficient.
