Stratifikace rizikovosti pacientů může pomoci ke snížení perioperační morbidity a mortality. Vhodným nástrojem je předoperační zátěžové vyšetření pomocí zátěžové spiroergometrie. Spiroergometrie poskytuje velké množství informací, ze kterých se pro predikci pooperačních komplikací nejčastěji používá vrcholová spotřeba kyslíku, anaerobní práh a ventilační efektivita.
