Geochemical characteristic of the Lučina River sediments

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis was to find out and evaluate changes in the composition of the river sediments of Lučina river and its tributary Sušanka in territory of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. At the both rivers were measured physico-chemical properties of water (pH, conductivity). The samples of surface water were taken at 11 locations and through chemical analysis were found content of the cations and anions in the water. A river sediment was taken to 8 locations downstream. The samples of the sediments were subjected for analysis of concentration of metals (Zn, As, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Ti) and other elements (P, Th) by X-ray fluorescence and optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. Both total organic carbon and total sulphur were also analyzed. Chemical analysis has shown three hydrochemical types of water, the most represented was Ca – HCO3 type at the Lučina river. Type Ca – SO4 was detected at the Sušanka river (SUS011). The nearby spring at the Lučina river (P LUC011) was characterized as Ca – Cl but does not affect on the quality of water in the river. High content of zinc (751,8 mg/kg) was detected at the location LUC008 of Lučina river. Content of zinc has exceeded the limit concentration of Decree No 257/2009 Coll. (300 mg/kg). Downstream Sušanka river (location LUC005) was measured the highest content of As with a value 13,6 mg/kg. The content of arsenic at all locations exceeded the limits for industrial territories (2,4 mg/kg), also for other areas (0,61 mg/kg) designated by Ministry of the Environment – Indicators of pollution. According to the geoaccumulation index of the Igeo classes, the sediments showed higher loads of Zn, Th, Ni, As and P, classified 4th and 5th class as strongly to extremely contaminated sediments. The metals Mn, Pb, Ti and V were classified 1st and 3rd class as uncontamined to moderately contamined sediments. The rivers were affected by a mining activity in the past. Nowadays, the situation is significantly improving.

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo zjistit a zhodnotit změny ve složení říčních sedimentů v říčním systému řeky Lučiny a její přítoku řeky Sušanky na území hornoslezské uhelné pánve. Na obou řekách byly měřeny fyzikálně-chemické parametry vody (pH, konduktivita). Na 11 lokalitách byly odebrány vzorky povrchové vody a chemickou analýzou byly zjištěny obsahy kationtů a aniontů ve vodě. Na řece Lučine byl odebírán říční sediment na 8 místech po směru toku. Vzorky sedimentů byly podrobeny analýzám na zjišťování koncentrací kovů (Zn, As, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Ti) a jiných prvků (P, Th) pomocí rentgen-fluorescenční analýzy a optické emisní spektrometrie s indukčně vázanou plazmou. Rovněž byl analyzován celkový organický uhlík a celková síra. Chemická analýza prokázala tři hydrochemické typy vod, nejvíce zastoupen byl Ca – HCO3 typ na řece Lučine. Na řece Sušance (SUS011) byl zjištěn typ Ca – SO4. Nedaleký pramen na Lučine (P LUC011) byl charakterizován jako Ca – Cl, ale na vodu v řece vliv nemá. Na lokalitě LUC008 řeky Lučiny byl zjištěn vysoký obsah Zn (751,8 mg/kg). Obsah zinku překročil limitní koncentraci Vyhlášky č. 257/2009 Sb. (300 mg/kg). Po směru toku Sušanky na místě LUC005 byl naměřen nejvyšší obsah As s hodnotou 13,6 mg/kg. Obsah arsenu na všech lokalitách po směru toku Lučiny přesahoval limity pro průmyslové území (2,4 mg/kg), i pro ostatní plochy (0,61 mg/kg) určené MŽP – Indikátory znečištění. Podle geoakumulačního indexu tříd Igeo, vykazovaly sedimenty vyšší zatížení Zn, Th, Ni, As a P, klasifikovány 4. a 5. třídou jako těžce až extrémně kontaminované sedimenty. Mn, Pb, Ti a V byly klasifikovány 1. a 3. třídou jako nekontaminované až středně kontaminované sedimenty. V minulosti byly obě řeky postiženy hornickou činností, v současnosti se situace výrazně zlepšuje.
