The interior of the Old Minorite Church in Levoča: the work of the Jesuit "arcularius" Olaf Engelholm?

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the authorship of the sacral furniture in the interior of the Old Minorite Church in Levoča, the origin of which relates to the name of the carpenter Olaf Engelholm and his workshop between 1695 and 1699. This carpenter represents a craftsman oscillating between craftsmanship and artistic work. Is it possible that the previous view of Engelholm was wrong? The reason for the felt difference is interpolated interpretations of archival sources. The text of the thesis closely follows the findings of the Hungarian art historian Baranyai, who works with the idea of participation with other local craftsmen besides Engelholm in the sacral furniture. Attention is paid to the work of Engelholm and his collaborators on the sacral furniture in the church, who completed the representative reconstruction of the church, and to other works outside Levoča. However, the main part of the work focuses on unexplored areas such as Engelholm's life or status. Finally, the thesis focuses on the issue of workshop service and the style analysis of the sacral furniture, including a comparison of the part sculptural decoration, and the typology of the altarpieces.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá problematikou autorstva mobiliáru v interiéri Starého minoritského kostola v Levoči, ktorého vznik sa spája s menom stolára Olafa Engelholma a jeho dielňou približne medzi rokmi 1695 a 1699. Tento stolár predstavuje remeselníka lavírujúceho medzi remeselnou a umeleckou tvorbou. Je možné, že doterajší pohľad na neho bol chybný? Dôvodom pocitovej odlišnosti sú interpolačné výklady archiválií. Text práce úzko nadväzuje na zistenia maďarskej historičky umenia Baranyaiovej, ktorá pracuje s myšlienkou, že na mobiliári sa okrem Engelholma podieľali aj ďalší miestni remeselníci a umelci. Pozornosť práce je venovaná činnosti Engelholma a jeho spolupracovníkov na mobiliári, ktorí zakončili reprezentatívnu prestavbu kostola, tak i ďalším realizáciám mimo Levoče. Prevažná časť práce sa dotýka aj nepreskúmaných oblastí, ako je jeho život alebo postavenie. V neposlednom rade sa práca zameriava na problematiku dielenskej prevádzky a štýlovú analýzu mobiliára kostola vrátane komparácie časti sochárskej výzdoby a typológie oltárnej tvorby.
