Imprints on bottoms of Great Moravian ceramics vessels as a tool to understand the economic and political complexity of the Great Moravia

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce si vzala za úkol prozkoumat potenciál den keramických nádob s hrnčířskými značkami pro zodpovídání otázek spjatých s úrovní společenské a politické organizace velkomoravské společnosti. K tomuto účelu využívá nástrojů a perspektiv kulturní antropologie a deduktivního teoretického modelování, jehož prostřednictvím propracovává kauzalitu mezi komplexitou centrální mocenské instituce a komplexitou ekonomických vztahů uvnitř velkomoravské společnosti. Tyto modely politickoekonomických vztahů následně restrukturalizuje do ekonomicko-geografického modelu pro jádro velkomoravského teritoria a testuje daty derivovanými z prostorově lokalizovanými hrnčířskými značkami. Výsledky vyhodnocení souboru 636 značek z center v Mikulčicích, na Pohansku u Břeclavi, Starých zámků v Brně-Líšni, ve Starém Městě a z pohřebišť v Prušánkách a Nechvalíně korelují s předpoklady odvozenými z teoretických modelů, čímž zároveň prezentují potenciál hrnčířských značek v dalším testování prognóz odvozených z modelu mocensky decentralizovaného charakteru velkomoravské společnosti.

Abstract:

Main objective of this thesis is to explore the potential of bottoms of ceramic vessels with imprinted pottery marks to answer scientific questions dealing with the level of social and political organisation of the Great Moravian society. For this purpose it uses tools and perspectives of anthropological archaeology and deductive theoretical modelling to elaborate causality between the complexity of central power institution and the character of economic relationships within the Great Moravian society. These political and economical models are then restructured to the economic and geographical model for the core of the Great Moravian polity and consequently tested using spatially localized pottery marks. Results of the assemblage evaluation consisted of 636 records from centres of Mikulčice, Pohansko near Břeclav, Brno-Líšeň, Staré Město, and cemeteries in Prušánky and Nechvalín correlate with prognoses derived from theoretic models, whereby they simultaneously present potential of pottery marks in future testing of prognoses derived from the model of decentralised character of the Great Moravian political organisation.
