Relationships between forest tree seed crops, small rodent’s populations and damage by bark gnawing in forest plantations

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na vyhodnocení souvislostí mezi populacemi drobných zemních savců, poškozením dřevin ohryzem ve výsadbách a úrodami semen lesních dřevin. Výzkum probíhal v oblasti severního konce Orlických hor a jejich podhůří, kde bylo vymezeno celkově 24 výzkumných ploch s různými typy lesních porostů. Z monitoringu početností drobných zemních savců se jako nejrozšířenější ukázal norník rudý, obývající především mladé výsadby. V dospělém plodícím lese byl nejpočetněji zastoupen rod myšic. Jako významné se ukázaly také populace hrabošů, vyhledávající stanoviště s bujným travinným patrem. Při výzkumu úrod semen lesních dřevin byly v roce 2022 a 2023 sledovány úrody buku a dubu při okraji i středu porostu, kdy v prvním z uvedených let byla úroda výrazně vyšší než v roce následujícím. Jako významný se ukázal vliv úrody semen na populace myšic. Z pohledu poškození dřevin ohryzem se jako nejpoškozovanější dřevinou ukázal buk. Poškození dřevin byla dále závislá na šířce kmene a výšce dřeviny, kdy více poškozovány byly zpravidla stromky menších rozměrů. Vliv úrody semen ani početnosti hlodavců na škody ohryzem zde nebyl průkazný.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis aims to evaluate the relationships between small rodent’s populations, damage by bark gnawing in forest plantations and seed crops of forest tree species. The research was conducted in the northern end of the Orlické hory Mountains and their foothills, where a total of 24 research plots with different types of forest stands were defined. From the monitoring of the abundance of small rodents, the most widespread was the bank vole, inhabiting mainly young plantations. In mature forest yellow-necked mouse and wood mouse was the most abundant. Populations of voles (common vole and field vole) also proved to be important, seeking habitats with a rich herbaceous understorey. In a study of seed crops of forest tree species, beech and oak crops were monitored at the edge and centre of the stands in 2022 and 2023, with the former yielding significantly higher than the latter. The effect of seed crops was found to be significant for yellow-necked mouse and wood mouse. In terms of bark gnawing damage, beech emerged as the most damaged tree species. Damage to trees was also dependent on the width of the trunk and the height of the tree, with smaller trees generally being more damaged. The effect of seed crops or rodent abundance on bark gnawing damage was not significant here.
