The Revision of the Western in Andrew Dominik's The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis takes a fresh look at the Western film genre, specifically focussing on a detailed analysis of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford by director Andrew Dominik. The thesis focusses on defining the western genre, including its development within history. It shows its origins within silent films to its imaginary peak in the 1950s. It focusses on aspects and features that were typical of the genre at the time. These characteristics are illustrated by the example of a typical representative of classic westerns, the Stagecoach. This film is then compared with The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which represents a different approach to the Western genre. This thesis aims to analyse and compare these two films to provide a new perspective on the Western genre. The research methodology consists of a detailed film analysis of both films, showing how the Western genre has evolved and how it can be interpreted in a modern context. The main findings of the thesis reveal that The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford introduces new perspectives and interpretative possibilities in the Western genre that differ from traditional conventions. The conclusions of the thesis highlight the significant differences and innovations that Dominik's film brings to the Western genre and emphasise that even the purely American Western genre still has room to move within its genre.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá novým pohledem na filmový žánr western, konkrétně se zaměřuje na detailní analýzu snímku Zabití Jesseho Jamese zbabělcem Robertem Fordem od režiséra Andrewa Dominika. Práce se zaměřuje na definování žánru westernu, včetně jeho vývoje v rámci historie. Zobrazuje jeho počátky v rámci němých filmů až po jeho pomyslný vrchol v 50. letech minulého století. Zaměřuje se na aspekty a znaky, které byly v tu dobu pro tento žánr typické. Tyto charakteristiky jsou ilustrovány na příkladu typického představitele klasických westernů Přepadení. Tento film je následně porovnán s filmem Zabití Jesseho Jamese zbabělcem Robertem Fordem, který je zástupcem odlišného přístupu k žánru westernu. Cílem práce je analyzovat a porovnat tyto dva filmy s cílem poskytnout nový pohled na žánr westernu. Metodologie výzkumu spočívá v detailní filmové analýze obou filmů, jejichž výsledky ukazují, jak se žánr westernu vyvíjel a jak může být interpretován v moderním kontextu. Hlavní zjištění práce odhalují, že Zabití Jesseho Jamese zbabělcem Robertem Fordem přináší nové perspektivy a interpretační možnosti ve westernovém žánru, které se liší od tradičních konvencí. Závěry práce podtrhují významné rozdíly a inovace, které Dominikův film přináší do žánru westernu a zdůrazňuje, že i čistě americký žánr western se má pořád v rámci svého žánru kam posouvat.
