The Trees Are Dying: Ecocritical Comparison of Tolkien’s and Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce zkoumá za pomoci teorie ekokritiky témata týkající se životního prostředí v Pánovi prstenů a porovnává rozdíly v jejich zobrazení v knihách J. R. R. Tolkiena a filmech Peter Jacksona. Práce srovnává postoj obou autorů k udržitelnosti životního prostředí a environmentální destrukci, rovněž zkoumá rozdíly v těchto postojích v kontextu příběhu. Dále se snaží odhalit, na které problémy týkající se životního prostředí Jackson klade větší důraz než Tolkien, a jaká byla jeho motivace pro tato rozhodnutí s ohledem na rozdílné sociální a historické pozadí obou verzí Pána prstenů. Nakonec se práce snaží zjistit, do jaké míry rozdílná atmosféra, ve které byla obě díla tvořena, ovlivnila filmovou verzi. Nejprve práce blíže popisuje teorii ekokritiky a pojednává o sociálním a historickém pozadí obou autorů a jejich prací. Ve druhé části textu jsou rozebírány vybrané skupiny postav, je vyzdvihnut jejich ekokritický potenciál a porovnána úspěšnost jeho zakomponování ve filmech a knižní předloze. Třetí část této práce se zabývá environmentální destrukcí – rozebírá boj přírody s průmyslem. Dále se soustředí na hněv přírody poté, co je jí ubližováno, na destrukci spojenou s válkou a také na genetickou modifikaci. Na závěr práce rozebírá zobrazení síly přírody v příběhu.

Abstract:

Employing ecocritical theory, this thesis explores environmental themes in The Lord of the Rings and compares the ways in which they are depicted in J. R. R. Tolkien’s books and Peter Jackson’s movies. It compares how each of the authors treats questions of sustainability and environmental destruction as both the book and the movie approach these questions from a different point of view despite both portraying the same story. Furthermore, the thesis examines which environmental issues are highlighted by Jackson as opposed to Tolkien and the motivation behind these decisions. It also considers the different socio-historical context in which these works were created and how this ultimately affected Jackson’s film version. First, the thesis is concerned with the ecocritical theory which it briefly introduces. Then it moves on to the socio-historical background of each of the authors and their respective works. The second part conducts an analysis of several selected characters from the story; the ecocritical potential of each of these characters is highlighted and the depiction of it in both works is compared and analysed. The third part of this thesis concerns environmental destruction; the fight of nature and the industry is analysed. This part further focuses on the rage of nature after it is being hurt and it then moves on to war destruction and genetic modification. Lastly, it elaborates on the power of nature depicted in the story.
