Motive of the double and the fight between good and evil in E. T. A. Hoffmann`s Works: The Sandman, The Devil`s Elixir and Das Majorat

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the motive of double and with the struggle of good and evil in selected works of the Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann. The thesis analyses three selected works: The Sandman, The Devil’s Elixirs and Das Majorat. On the basis of these analyzes practical part of thesis processes the motive of double and so-called struggle of good and evil in these selected works, and this fight is between elements of enlightenment and late romanticism in the literary production of E. T. A. Hoffmann. The theoretical part of thesis describes life and the literary work of author, as well as the beginnings of the motive of double in the literary production from antique times and includes these three selected works into the historical and cultural context of the late romanticism.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca pojednáva o motíve dvojníka a boji medzi dobrom a zlom vo vybraných dielach pruského autora E. T. A. Hoffmanna. Predložená práca analyzuje tri vybrané diela: Der Sandmann, Die Elixiere des Teufels a Das Majorat. Na základe týchto analýz spracúva praktická časť práce motív dvojníka a takzvaný boj medzi dobrom a zlom v týchto vybraných dielach, pričom ide o boj medzi elementmi osvietenstva a neskorého romantizmu v literárnej tvorbe E. T. A. Hoffmanna. Teoretická časť práce opisuje život a literárnu činnosť autora ako aj počiatky motívu dvojníctva v literárnej tvorbe od obdobia antiky a zaraďuje tieto tri vybrané diela do historického ale aj kultúrneho kontextu obdobia neskorého romantizmu.
