The Great Mother Cybele: Hellenistic Modification of her Cult

Abstract:

Velká Matka, která je v pramenech nejčastěji nazývána Kybelé pochází z maloasijské Frýgie. Odtud se časem dostala do maloasijských řeckých měst a poté i do samotného Řecka. Důležitou transformaci tento kult prodělal během tzv. období helénismu, od tohoto období začíná být pokládán za jeden z tzv. mysterijních kultů. Dalším důležitým mezníkem v dějinách tohoto kultu je rok 204 př. n. l., kdy byl jako první orientální kult oficiálně uveden do Říma. Největší rozkvět zažívá v období císařství, určitou dobu dokonce konkuroval nově nastupujícímu křesťanství, ale nakonec si svou pozici neudržel a poslední zmínky o něm máme ze 4. století n. l. Část práce je věnovaná popisu kultických praktik, otázce kněží (galloi), problematice eunuchismu, slavnostem a rituálům (březnové slavnosti, taurobolium, criobolium...). Důležitá role byla v rámci kultu připisována Attidovi, který se z vegetativního typu božstva transformuje v období helénismu v tzv. „mystického boha“ se specifickými soteriologickými aspekty. Práce je založena na konfrontaci dostupné sekundární literatury s dobovou reflexí kultu. Jako ukázku dobové reflexe jsem si vybrala díla dvou helénistických autorů Apuleia a Lúkiána.

Abstract:

The Great Mother, which is in the sources known as Cybele comes from Phrygia in the Asia Minor. Lately, this cult appeared in the Greek cities in the Asia Minor and then in the Greece. There was important transformation of this cult during the hellenistic period – from this time is considered as a mysteric cult. Another important turning point in the history of this cult is the year 204 BC, when it was officially introduced into the Rome as the first oriental cult. The biggest heyday appeared in the period of Empire. It even compete with Christianity, which was quite new, but finally this cult lost its position and last references are from the 4th century AD. One part of this work is devoted to description of cultic practices, issues of priesthood (galloi), eunuchism, celebrations and rites (The March festivals, taurobolium, criobolium...). Important role in the cult played Attis, who transformed from type of vegetation god to „mystic god“ with specifical soteriological aspects in the period of Hellenism. This work is based on confrontation of existing secondary literature with period reflexion of the cult. I chosed books of two hellenistic authors (Apuleius and Lucianus) as an example of this period reflexion.
