The Spanish Verse and the Czech Verse: Translation of the Polymetric Plays of Calderón de la Barca

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the topic of the translation of verse from the Spanish to the Czech language and it is focused on the comparison between the verse of the original and the verse of translations. The objective of the thesis is to examine the verse of Calderón’s polymetric plays, to compare the Spanish and the Czech versification systems (which are based on different prosodies) and to analyze the strategies of the Czech translators. The main part of the work is a comparative versological study made by using the statistical methods (vertical an horizontal statistics). In the last chapter we examine how the theater directors reduce and modify one of the translations (La vida es sueño, translated by Vladimír Mikeš), which is to serve as a text of perfomance: despite of a very accurate form of the translation, the resulting text do not respect the polymetry and the strophic and non-strophic forms are violated. So in the conclusion we propose some solutions to make the translation more flexible. The goal of our thesis is to contribute to the field of versology and to the translation practice.

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zaobírá tématem překladu verše ze španělštiny do češtiny na základě komparace verše originálu a verše překladu. Cílem práce je analyzovat Calderónovy polymetrické hry po veršové stránce, komaparovat španělské a české versifikační systémy (jež se zakládají na odlišných prozodiích) a následně analyzovat strategie českých překladatelů. Hlavní část práce je srovnávací versologická studie, ve které jsme využili statistické metody (vertikální a horizontální statistika verše). V poslední kapitole odhalujeme, kterak divadelní režiséři redukují a modifikují jeden z překladů (Život je sen, překlad od Vladimíra Mikeše), který slouží coby text různých inscenací v několika českých divadlech: navzdory překladatelovu přesnému formálnímu řešení výsledné texty nerespektují polymetrii a strofické a nestrofické formy v nich jsou závažným způsobem narušeny. V závěru práce navrhujeme překladatelská řešení, jež by mohla pomoci učinit text flexibilnějším. Domníváme se, že naše disertační práce může být jistým přínosem na poli teorie verše a srovnávací versologie a rovněž by mohla být do určité míry užitečná překladatelům a divadelním režisérům.
