Everything That Rises May Diverge: Deceptive Minds in Flannery O´Connor´s Short Stories

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis titled "Everything That Rises May Diverge: Deceptive Minds in Flannery O´Connor´s Short Stories" deals with research of the three motifs The Religion, The Race and The Mother and Daughter Relationship and tries to interpret its meaning and its influence on individual characters who appear in the selected short stories from the two collections A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Everything That Rises Must Converge. This work provides information about these two collections which were written by an American author Flannery O´Connor. The first part of this thesis is devoted to Flannery O´Connor and also to her most significant works. The second part concentrates on the motif of The Religion, the selected short stories and provides an analysis of an influence of the theme on the selected characters from the short stories. The third part deals with the motif of The Race, the selected short stories and provides an analysis of an influence of the motif on the selected characters from the short stories. The fourth part concerns the motif of The Mother and Daughter Relationship, the selected short stories and provides an analysis of an influence of the motif on the selected characters from the short stories. This thesis aims to provide an analysis of the three motifs The Religion, The Race and The Mother and Daughter Relationship and tries to examine to a what extent these motifs affect the individual characters and their actions.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce s názvem "Všechno, co povznáší, se může rozcházet: Klamné mysli v krátkých povídkách Flannery O´Connor" se zabývá výzkumem vlivu tří motivů Náboženství, Rasy a Vztahu matky a dcery a snaží se interpretovat význam a vliv těchto motivů na jednotlivé postavy, které se objevují ve vybraných povídkách ze sbírek Dobrého člověka těžko najdeš a Všechno, co se povznáší, se musí setkat. Tato práce poskytuje informace o těchto dvou sbírkách, které napsala americká spisovatelka Flannery O´Connor. První část práce je věnována Flannery O´Connor a jejím nejvýznamnějším dílům. Druhá část je zaměřena na motiv Náboženství, vybrané povídky a vliv motivu na vybrané postavy z povídek. Třetí část se zabývá motivem Rasy, vybranými povídkami a vlivem motivu na vybrané postavy z povídek. Čtvrtá část se zajímá o motiv Vztahu matky a dcery, vybrané povídky a vliv motivu na vybrané postavy z povídek. Tato práce poskytuje analýzu vlivu tří motivů Náboženství, Rasy a Vztahu matky a dcery a pokouší se zjistit, do jaké míry tyto motivy ovlivňují jednotlivé postavy a jejich jednání.
