Recycling Narratives - A Way of Critiquing Patriarchal Society in Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat tři vybrané povídky z knihy Angely Carter The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. Angela Carter převypravuje známé pohádky a podrobuje je feministické kritice, jelikož pohádky jako žánr zachovávají a reflektují patriarchální myšlenky, hodnoty a pravidla společnosti. Přepracováním pohádek Carter upozorňuje na genderovou nerovnost a kritizuje patriarchální principy, v jejichž důsledku dochází k páchaní bezpráví na ženách. Práce zkoumá hlavní rozdíly mezi verzemi tradiční pohádky a jejich přepracováními. Dále zkoumá způsoby, které Angela Carter používá ke kritickému rozebrání známých pohádkových příběhů, a prostředky, pomocí nichž boří stereotypy ve zobrazovaní postav. Práce také rozebírá zamýšlený význam těchto přepracování.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyze three selected short stories from the collection The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter. Carter retells and recycles well-known fairy tale stories from the feminist critique perspective as the fairy tale genre perpetuates the patriarchal ideology, its values and the norms. By revising the tales, Carter points out the gender imbalance contained in them and she criticizes the patriarchal principles that cause injustice to women. The thesis examines the main differences between the traditional versions of the tales and Carter's revisions. Further, it examines the ways and Carter uses in order to deconstruct the well-known tales and the means she uses to destroy the stereotypes in the depiction of the characters. The thesis discusses the outcome and intended meaning of the revised stories as well.
