Influence of psychotherapists' religiosity and spirituality in their work with clients with a life-threatening disease

Abstract:

Tato kvalitativní studie měla za cíl prozkoumat, jak se religiozita či spiritualita psychoterapeuta odráží v jeho práci s klienty s život ohrožujícím onemocněním. Bylo realizováno deset polo-strukturovaných rozhovorů s terapeuty, kteří se identifikovali jako religiózní či spirituální a měli zkušenost s prací v daném pracovním kontextu. Rozhovory byly následně analyzovány pomocí metody tematické analýzy. Studie přináší zjištění o způsobu, jakým se spiritualita terapeutů dotýká klientů skrze vliv na způsob, jakým se terapeut ke klientovi vztahuje a skrze rozšíření repertoáru terapeutických technik, ovšem za dodržování zásady téma spirituality explicitně z vlastní iniciativy do terapie nevnášet. Spiritualita se podílí na zvládání psychicky náročného pracovního kontextu, stává se zdrojem smyslu této práce, ovlivňuje prožívání terapeutů v kontaktu s klientem a poskytuje terapeutovi podklad pro postoje ke smrti a utrpení. Bylo zjištěno, že práce v tomto kontextu zpětně ovlivňuje spiritualitu terapeutů. Výsledky jsou diskutovány v kontextu dosavadních zjištění týkajících se zkoumaného fenoménu.

Abstract:

This qualitative research aims to explore how religiosity and spirituality of psychotherapists influence their practice with clients with life-threatening disease. Ten psychotherapists, who rated themselves as religious or spiritual and had an experience with this therapeutic context, were interviewed. Interviews were analysed using the method of thematic analysis. The study brings findings about the way how spirituality of therapists affects clients through its impact on a therapist’s way of relating to client and through broadening their repertoire of therapeutic techniques, yet on condition that spirituality theme is not explicitly introduced into therapy by therapists themselves. Spirituality is involved in coping with psychologically demanding practice, becomes a source of meaning of the work, influences emotional experience in contact with client and provides a base for his attitude to death and suffering. It was found that practice in this therapeutic setting influences spirituality of therapists in return. Findings are discussed in relation to existing research findings regarding this phenomenon.
