The effect of a simulated sports commentator environment on interpreter performance

Abstract:

Práce si dala za úkol zkoumat dopad simulovaného tlumočení sportovního komentátora na výkon tlumočníka. V teoretické části se zaměřila na literaturu zabývající se profesí sportovního komentátora, odborností vyžadovanou v této roli a nároky, které jsou na tyto pozice kladeny v médiích a při živých přenosech. Dále popisuje požadavky, které jsou kladeny na tlumočníky v oblasti médií a v následující kapitole specificky v mediálním odvětví sportu a sportovních přenosů. Stručně představuje silové sporty, na jejichž tlumočení je zkoumán tlumočnický výkon, a vybírá kritéria, která chce sledovat ve svém experimentu, který tvoří hlavní část praktické části. Dále popisuje, jakým způsobem byli vybráni účastníci, kteří se stali pozorovanými subjekty. Vysvětluje metodu výběru nahrávek pro tlumočení a dále se věnuje nezbytnému zpracování terminologie a materiálů, které byly potřebné pro experiment. Popisuje technické aspekty a také časovou náročnost průběhu experimentu. Data získaná z experimentu ve formě zvukových nahrávek byla přepsána do písemné podoby a následně pečlivě anotována podle předem stanovených kritérií. Analýza byla provedena na dvou úrovních. Byl srovnáván vliv komentátorského prostředí mezi podobně zkušenými tlumočníky a následně napříč celým vzorkem.

Abstract:

The thesis set out to investigate the impact of simulated sports commentator interpreting on interpreter performance. The theoretical part focused on the literature dealing with the profession of sports commentator, the sprots exeprt and their roles and the demands placed on these positions in the media and in live broadcasts. It then goes on to describe the demands placed on interpreters in media and, in the following chapter, specifically in the media sector of sport and sports broadcasting. It briefly introduces the power sports on which interpreting performance is examined and selects the criteria it wants to follow in its experiment, which forms the main part of the practical section. It further describes how the participants were selected and explains the method of selecting the recordings for interpreting. It then goes on to discuss the creation of the terminology and materials that were necessary for the experiment. It also describes the technical aspects as well as the amount of time the experiment would take The data obtained from the experiment in the form of audio recordings were transcribed into written form and then carefully annotated according to predetermined criteria. The analysis was carried out on two levels. The effect of the commentator environment was compared between similarly experienced interpreters and then across the whole sample.
