Individualism and Relationships in American Film

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá vývoj individualismu v americké kultuře v průběhu historie, společně s vývojem milostných vztahů a jak jsou tato témata zobrazena v americkém filmu. V první části tato práce definuje fenomén individualismu, který srovnává s jinými, kolektivistickými kulturami a dále rozebírá individualismus v historickém kontextu americké kultury a vývoje amerického charakteru. Rovněž tato práce rozebírá problematiku milostných vztahů a manželství a sleduje je napříč historií a změnami ve společnosti a zkoumá, jak jsou tyto vztahy ovlivněny americkým individualismem. Ve druhé části pak tato práce skrze příklady analyzuje, jak jsou individualismus a vážné vztahy zobrazeny v amerických filmech, a zda se zobrazení těchto témat shoduje s teoriemi individualismu a jeho vlivem ve vztazích, jež byly zkoumány v předchozích kapitolách.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is exploring the development of individualism in the American culture through history, along with the development of romantic relationships and the depiction of those cultural aspects in American film. In the first part, the thesis defines individualism as a phenomenon, it explores it in the relation to other, collectivist cultures and discusses the historical context of the individualistic American culture and the development of the individualistic character. Further, the thesis is looking into the problematic of interdependent romantic relationships and marriages, observes them through the historical changes in society, and discusses how are they influenced by American individualism. In the second part, the film analysis and examples are presenting how individualism and committed relationships are portrayed in the American film, and whether the portrayal confirms the theories of the influence of individualism explored in the first two chapters.
