U.S. - Japanese Alliance and its Preservation After the Cold War through the Lens of the Alliance Theories Based on Realism

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou zachování aliance USA a Japonska po skončení studené války. Práce vychází z předpokladů teorií aliancí vycházejících z realismu, které považují za základní důvod vzniku a fungování aliancí rovnováhu moci nebo rovnováhu hrozeb. Tyto předpoklady jsou testovány na základě případové studie aliance USA a Japonska a jejích reakcí na mocenský vzestup Číny a jadernou hrozbu KLDR. Hlavním výzkumným cílem je pak zodpovězení otázky, zda tento mocenský vzestup Číny a severokorejská hrozba přispívají k oživení dynamiky aliančních struktur.

Abstract:

The work deals with the issue of maintaining the U.S. - Japan alliance after the Cold war. The thesis comes from assuptions of theories of alliances based on realism, which consider the balance of power or balance of threats as fundamental reason for the creation and persistent funcitoning of alliances. These assumtions are tested by the case study of the U.S. - Japan alliance and its response to the power rise of China and nuclear threat of DPRK. The main research goal is to answer the research question whether the China´s power rise and the North Korean nuclear threat contribute to the recovery of the alliance structures dynamics.
