Childhood During Occupation: Foster Care and Evacuation Of Children During the Second World War in Annika Thor’s Books

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá pěstounstvím a evakuací dětí během druhé světové války v dílech Anniky Thor. Cílem práce je přiblížit prů-běh záchranných akcí, při kterých byly během druhé světové války evakuovány děti a poukázat na to, jaké tyto evakuace na dětech zane-chaly následky. Druhým cílem je analyzovat tyto události v dílech švéd-ské autorky Anniky Thor. Záchranné operace, které jsou v práci roze-brány, jsou Kindertransport, tedy evakuace židovských dětí; evakuace finských dětí do Švédska a evakuace žen a dětí ve Velké Británii. Sou-částí toho je také shrnutí hlavních psychologických následků, které evakuace na dětech zanechaly. Druhou stěžejní částí práce je pak ana-lýza obsahu již zmíněných děl. Předmětem analýzy jsou prvky průběhu evakuace, vnímání války, asimilace dětí v krajině, konce války a návra-tu dětí do jejich domovů. Součástí této analýzy je pak také shrnutí toho, v čem se tyto prvky shodují se skutečnými událostmi.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis examines foster care and evacuation of children during the Second World War in Annika Thor’s books. The aim of the thesis is to present the course of rescue operations during which chil-dren were evacuated during the World War II and to point out the consequences that these evacuations had on the children. The second goal of this study is to analyze these events in the books of the Swedish author Annika Thor. The rescue operations that are analyzed in the thesis are the Kindertransport, i.e., the evacuation of Jewish children; the evacuation of Finnish children to Sweden and the evacuation of women and children in the United Kingdom. This also includes a summary of the main psychological consequences these evacuations have left on the children. The second key part of the thesis is the con-tent analysis of the previously mentioned works. The elements that are analyzed here are the process of the evacuation, the perception of the war, the assimilation of the children in the respective country, the end of the war and the return of the children to their homes. The analysis also includes a summary of how these elements correspond with actual events.
